Thumbs up The "Clunk" is gone!

After having the driveshaft yoke lubed with Teflon grease for that annoying rear end "clunk" and having no relief from that "quick fix", I went back to the dealer and had the service manager go for a ride in my truck. He immediately admitted that the clunk was still there and recommended that the driveshaft be replaced. I had that performed Monday and all that I can say is, what a difference! If you are experiencing the same thing ask about having the drive shaft assembly replaced. I was holding off on making any comments until I drove my truck for a while to see if this was just temporary, but looks like this is the fix!

Jawbreaker,
Can you be more specific about the "clunk". I have an 05 screw that has a "clunk" also. It feels as if a brake is hanging when I first start moving, then a brake is grabbing when the vehicle is almost stopped. But it is definetly in the drive train.

Chassismaster,
The clunk that I had sounds exactly like what you are experiencing. The clunk was especially noticable from a dead stop on acceleration and then just after coming to a dead stop. As it was explained to me, the pinion angle is steeper on the 4x4s and puts more load on the slip yoke going into the transmission. The clunk is due to the slip yoke binding on the transmission spline. Makes sense to me, I guess. Does that help with your question?

Sounds exactly what my truck does....maybe I'll have 'em check it out when I take it in for an oil change this week.

Replacement Driveshaft

When all else was said and done my local Ford dealer replaced the driveshaft. My truck was still under 12&12 so there was no cost to me. Is the problem fixed? I have only driven the truck home from the dealer and was unable to convince the truck to repeat the problem. Did the truck "clunk" since new?.. Yes, with varying degrees of acceleration. More info with more milage. 11740 on vehicle now expect update in a month. If you have a new vehicle definetly describe the symptoms to the dealer before you run out of 12& 12. Once 12001 rolls around do not expect help from a dealer unless you have reported it before the warranty expires.

my 99 has started clunking a week ago. It only does it when I am braking. I thought it was the transmission but I put it in Neutral before braking, and I still got the clunk. So I figure its not the trans.

But now I have no idea

Any ideas?

The famous thump/bump... thought I would be rid of that possibility getting outta my 00 ranger... I had the driveshaft replaced and it lasted about long enough to get me outta waranty... Its related to the U joint and slip yolk needing lubing or something to that matter... its annoying as hell i know that!!!

Clunk

I took my 2004 F150 into Ford for the "clunk" which on mine sounded like it came from the transmission, difficult to tell though. We took it for a test drive, the Tech confirmed he heard the noise also. So we went into the Service Mgr office and plugged my trucks info into the computer. What shows up? A list of TSB's specific to that VIN, the "clunk" from the Transmission was noted BUT also stated it was a "normal" occurance and DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIR. So that ended my visit for the Clunk, I wish I could have gotten a printout of all the TSB's for my F150 but, of course they would give me one. Also as we know they'll only work on the problems you report, nothing PROACTIVE about Ford!

That's kinda scary. I am out of my 12/12 but I thought these trucks came with 36k warranties...

Good thing I don't have a clunk, and here is to me never getting one.

Also had the clumk on my 04 FX4. Had 2000 miles on it when I finally took it in. Mine was more of a bumping after moving from a dead stop. It ended up being the clutch plate within the transmission, tech told me that this is a problem that Ford knows about and has had many warranty issues with. That was back in January 05 and I see that folks are still having probelms. Seems like Ford would issue a recall and check this problem. Anyway I'm sitting at 13000 miles and no problems since.
