AF1- be quiet!

I am thinking about the AF1 but is sounds like people are having tons of problems with excess noise. Do you thinkk putting some Dynamat or something temp resistant on the tube or around the cage where the intake filter is would make a difference? I know there are also paintable liquids like quietcote and others that are temp resistant. Thoughts, comments?

I guess in these types of intakes, is the sound more so resonating from the tube(metal is a great resonator!) or is it more coming from the intake entrance?

I'm very pleased with the AF1, I don't think there's any unwanted noise , any loudness coming from it seems to be from the actual intake and I LOVE IT

The sound is the air being sucked in through the filter by the engine. I guess you could stuff towels around the filter to quiet it down

My AF1 is only loud when I romp on the gas petal. I find myself doing that more, since I love hearing the music it plays.

I agree... I wish I could hear one that someone thinks is loud... I guess I can't understand this complaint without hearing someone else's opinion... mine seems very 'normal' and isn't loud at all...

It DOES! After almost a gallon of quietcoat its at near-acceptable levels. After some dynamat I think all will be back to normal. I find the AF1 uber annoying when you initially punch it it lets out a frighting groan (think rhino in pain) then it goes away until it 4k or so when it begins to have a higher pitched screaming banshee type sound to it, then by 5k it really mellows out. Withouth the quietcoat I would have ripped that POS out by now. Not only that, but I still am disappointed in the quality of the product. Fit & finish was 4th grade level. Not only the annoying install, but post install as well - the filter was smashing against the hoodliner rubbing it off and making horrid knocking noises. Once I figured that out and pushed the filter all the way onto the tube all was well. A few folks said putting the filter on the end of the tube helped with their sound issues. Either way I'm screwed. The other think people love is how pretty the polished tube is... whatever, its under the hood and now mine is black since its covered in sound goo.

Facts are with my tuner & magnaflow adding the AF1 took about .05-.2 off my quarter time depending on conditions. Throttle response is better, but it wasn't horrid before. If you like the quiet cabin, I'd think twice about a CAI and just get the K&N drop in (I had that prior, and it was a smidge better than stock).

Perhaps my noise tolerance levels are low or my idea of what a powerful engine should sound like is off, but the AF1 sucks in the decibal department.

I know I originally ordered the AF1 and Xcal2 over late summer when the waiting list was FOREVER!! During the waiting period I read more and more about the various issues and decided against the AF1 and had them substitute with the Airaid! I am glad I did as I have not had a single problem and isn’t really all that noisy!! With the way its pushed on this forum I sometimes wonder if the vendors don’t possibly make more money on the AF1 over the Airaid due to limited distribution? Seems to me a good chunk of people have issues with the AF1 with only a couple of brown nosers really putting their 2 cents in about how great it is every time someone has a issue.

How about when you would like to talk in the cab without having to raise your voice or when it is accompanied by the frequently reported Check Engine Light? Not too welcome then.

I'm not.

EDIT: The excessive noise occurred during towing of our travel trailer, and you literally could not talk over it without raising your voice.

I can see that happening because you’re always under a big load towing a heavy trailer. I don’t tow often and when I do, it’s a pair of jet skis that don’t weigh much. My cruising experience, as far as excessive noise goes, is good and when I nail it, I want it to sound off, which it does
