Surging rpm on cold start

I have a 2005 f150 4x4 with 2500 miles on it now. Every morning when I start it up, the rpm's vary between 1600 and 1900 rpm's for the first 3 seconds or so and then over the course of 30 seconds will slowly go down to around 800 rpm. I know that its normal to have a higher cold start rpm to help warm up the engine but I thought it normaly should be around 1200 or so rpm for the first couple of seconds. I keep my truck in the garage and it's not cold outside yet. And there have been several times when after starting it, the rpm's will be around 1600 and for a couple of seconds and then raise up to 2000 and stay there for around 5 seconds and then finally lower back down.

Today was the worst so far. It started at 1800 rpm and then went to 2100 rpm for about 6 seconds. With my magnaflow exhaust on it, it sounds like a racecar and I just cringed because I knew I had to have woken up all of my neighbors. So, what worries me the most is that after the intial high rpm start, it would actually raise several hundred more rpm before finally lowering. Does this sound like a problem or is it because I only have 2500 miles on it and it will get better with more miles? Thanks for any help.

Mine hits 1500 to 1800 on a cold start (not cold temperature wise though) and I live in FL so I would say it's normal. That’s why 5W (whatever) oil is good for these engines

You can't tell me that doesn't put a huge smile on your face everytime you cold start the truck.

Well, I wouldn't mind so much if the sound it made was deeper instead of a high pitch sound I get with my magnaflow. At least from the inside of my truck, it sounds like a cat is dieing.

My truck does the same thing! The other night I was leaving a buddies house after watchign a movie around midnight and when I fired my truck up my magnaflow INSTANTLY set off HIS car alarm haha.

Good times...

I wonder if a re-flash would fix this? I might use this as an excuse to get it re-flashed.

Cold start + Flows, I love that sound. Echoes through the garage nicely right out into the neighborhood.
