I looked at that set-up too. It looks good. Do you think you could get out more than 4 miles if you had a dedicated antenna? Did the shop mention anything to that effect?

Now that's what I'm talkin about. Actually I only need 7-10 miles that would be great. I live in the Detroit area of Michigan and there are no good shops around here. So I'm stuck to buying one online and hope it's not a sham. They say peaked & tuned but who knows for sure.

I used to have a cobra 75 (still have it, in fact...sitting on the shelf in the shop) and I never had much luck with reception over about 3 miles. It seemed I could get out further, but if you can't hear the reply, that kind of takes away the "2-way" effect, doesn't it?

Back in the day (early 80's) the cb/fm radio splitters worked okay for the cb, but would drastically reduce am and fm reception on weak/distant signals. Can't imagine they've changed a whole lot....

Rochester, you might be surprised-check out the big truck stops and you'll find Cobra 75s and a lot of other cbs. Petro, TravelSquare, Flying J, they all have decent quzntities of cb equipment.

Podunk, let's see some pics!

I have no problems with FM reception, But I think using my FM antenna has definently hurt my CB reception. I can get 3-4 miles very clearly, then its starts to go south. I think with my current set up, a faint 5.5-6 miles is the best I could hope for.

A real CB antenna would make a HUGE improvement.

The Cobra 75 WX ST is just as good as any other CB. Its not a flimsy walkie talkie, The thing cost me $119.99 It has 40 channels, 10 weather channels, 4 watts of power "Maximum allowed by federal regulations", and it comes with "Sound Tracker".

All the controls are in the mic, the guts are mounted up under the dash. It saves a ton of room and looks alot better then having a big clunky box bolted to the dash.

If your going to install a CB in your car or pick up, The remote mount is the only way to go.

P.S. ROCHESTER, I think 10 miles in Detroit is asking alot out of a CB. You will probably get alot of static and wont be able to make any thing out.

The best suggestion I can make is to get a Good Antenna . Get a Real CB.
And of course you can always get a bi-linear, but I personally kind of frown on those.

linears are like using a bull horn to talk to some one on the other side of a crowded room. It gets the job done, but it seems to irritate every one else in the proccess.

Sorry to get you out of your pj's. I know how fustrating that can be. I need to get 7-10 miles while traveling north on I-75. That area is pretty much open farms with some scattered small towns. Since the last post I have looked into the Magnum 257 10 Meter radio. Very powerfull and a nice size. Only problem is they switched manufacturing plants and there has been a huge disruption in delivery. No shop here in the U.S. has one. I have gotten a hold of some shop in NZ with some, I guess we will see. As far as I know you cannot mod the 75 at all, but like you said with a good antenna this may work for me. I will update once I make a decision, and post pictures of the mount. Thanks for everyones help.

Is there a good antennae that does not look so goofy mounted. I would like something low profile, not too big.

Also, what are the main channels civilians operate off of, for recreational use (i.e. 4 wheeling, trail riding, etc). I have a buddy who is heavily into modding CB's and I remember him mentioning there are common channels but I am not sure if those were known internationally or just in my area.

Length with Antennas, is like Displacement with engines.

The best way to get more power is to get a bigger one.

If you want a small one, your range will be decreased.

As far as the channels go........

9 is for emergencies

19 is the public communication channel

If your just talking amongst freinds, Use one of the other 38 channels.

I how ever reccomend staying away from channel 11. It seems to be the favorite channel of CB Homo's. At least thats what it says on the bathroom wall at the truck stop.

Im not joking

CB Installations

They should start a CB thread. There are cb posts all over the forums. Here's how I did mine:

This is a serious request from you cb guru's who know what you're talking about. I will buy it immediately if someone can confidently point me in the right direction, here is my budget/requirements. Sorry for reviving the thread but we'll see if it's worth it's own thread depending on the replies.

Budget: $100-125. I'm not sure what I can buy with this but it's not worth more than that to me.

Requirements: I need it to reach in and around trails, it needs to reach at least 3-4 miles. I'd like a very clean looking cb, and a clean looking antennae. I really take a liking to those glass suction antennae's, they're very techie and not too large (about 2-3 feet tall) usually stuck on the back windows of trucks. Audio quality should be pretty good to decent. Is there anything that fits into my budget. I considered that Cobra 75 handheld but not sure about it's range and whether or not an additional antennae can be used in conjunction with it. I also like the cb install on the top of the dash, if I had to get a box unit.

Let me know my options and a link or two wouldn't hurt.
