Mpg

I've been reading these posts for a while but this might be my first post. I know its come up over and over again but I can't seem to find any real answers tot he MPG question and the troyer performance upgrades stage 1 or 2? I'm considering the performance upgrades for the HP but I need to justify it to myself for the MPG. Anyone out there have any real info on MPG gains with intakes, exhaust, chips, pulleys, and or electric fans? Thanks for your help. Oh, it'll be for a 2004 super cab 150 4x4 5.4

From: ???.....depends on the day
you will NEVER EVER see gains in MPG that will justify performance Mods.....they are too expensive to compensate for the MINOR gains you will see....

Just to add on what wstahlm80 said: never ever ever never EVER NEVER NEVER EVER get the gains that will justify the mods you speak off. I've done them, and if I really really really behave in my driving I see 0.1-0.4 mpg. Hmmm... I should recoup that grand I spend by 2084... But with all the cool mods you want to drive it and hear and feel it, so your mpg's will prolly go DOWN.

Mart,
obviously I did use the search hence I've been readingt eh posts ..but seeing as though people like you continually say u didn't search and don't add any decent input unlike the two people following you, questions never get answered. But gee thanks for your time its really appreciated. As for everyone that actually gives input I do appreciate it. I understand it not really going to "justify" the mods, but I was pretty much hopeing that it would help justify them. I mean I'm in it for the HP but I need to convince my wife and the wallet with the MPG. I understand if you like the sounds and performance you drive a little crazier, but aside from that what about the stuff I read about pullies given ya 2-3mpg, or K&N intakes giving back up to 3MPG. Is it really all Bull, or is it there and just lost by the change in driving style? Thanks for any input

I have put on the Airforce one intake and the Xcalibrator with a 93 octane performance tune and I am getting about 14 mpg. Before I put on the mods I was getting..... (drumroll) 14 mpg! Now I am just using the old divide the number of gallons to fill up by the amount of miles driven so it may not be that accurate. To say one thing, I like the way it sounds and feels when I goose it.

You also pay 30 cents more per gallon with the higher octane fuel? Performance mods and milage do not interelate. 89 fuel,05 150 ext cab 5.4 getting an honest 15.7. No mods

If you want to convince your wife, just show her the write ups on the site selling the products. They all say they'll improve your milage. That way you dont lie to her, the vendors did it for you. You cant lie to the wallet. I've got an AF1, 1714 tuner, exhaust and bed cover. I didn't buy any of them for better mpg's. If I had, I'd be pretty disappointed because none of them made one bit of difference.

Well I can honestly say that the mods I have installed have helped my MPG numbers. I have the X-calibrator2 with the 87 tow/93tow/93performance tunes.( read this bigbudman, there is an 87 octane tune the enhances performance greatly so theres no need to buy premium fuel if you don't want to. By the way your wasting $$ buying 89 because your truck is not benefiting as it is tuned for 87 from the factory), AirForce1, and a Magnaflow muffler installed in my stock exhaust system.
This past weekend I drove down to Virginia for a Dyno Tuning Session and averaged over 18 MPG, with the cruise set on 65 and never doing above that. Then after some tweeking on the tunes while on the dyno, I averaged a little over .7 mpg "better" on the return trip while running 75-85 miles per hour.
My truck is an 04 Supercrew 4x4 with a two inch leveling kit in the front and I am running on 285/75/17 BFG's(bigger than stock foot print) so my truck is punching a very large hole in the wind.
Before I installed "any" mods I was averaging around 15.5 to 16.5 running under the same conditions...
I am **** about my vehicles and the information and records I keep on them so please don't think I don't know how to figure gas mileage..I make my living in the automobile industry.
I say a properly tuned "modded" truck will achieve better fuel economy than a stock unit....
Don't expect a return on your money overnight, but it will happen....

Low Octane chip? What are the numbers I can expect? 20hp? Its my understanding, the chip needs the airflow and exhaust to function properly. These three mods are say 1800.00, thats what I pay for fuel for the entire year. I would love to see better performane on 87 fuel and milage too, but I would not be doing it just to save money. Also my numbers are city numbers, maybe 15% highway.
Just for info, is my warranty effected with a chip?
What is the name of the low octane chip, I may give it a try.

I use the Xcal for performance, not for increased MPG. I can say that I have a 93 towing tune that I use and it does increase the MPG. It also makes the truck respond alot better.

Its not a chip, its the X-Calibrator2 hand held tuner. I suggest you call Mike or Anita at Troyer Performance and discuss it with them. Keep in mind that the tuner holds 3 tunes, and has diagnostic capabilities. The tunes you choose are up to you. You really owe it to yourself to call them.....

How important is the intake and exhaust mod?
