Crazy Idea #185, Removing the Bed...

I searched, and after pages of worthless hits I'm starting a new thread.

What is it going to take to actually REMOVE the bed from my truck? Just 6 bolts and a couple wires? I ask since should my expirement with the QuietCoat products go well, I am planning to coat most of the underbody. I think it would be hella-cool (and effective) to remove the bed and completely coat the bottom (and back of the cab). I figure with a few guys and a wrench I can make it happen. Is that all there is to it? Anything I should be aware of removing or re-installing the bed? Anybody do this?

You are going to have to remove the gas filler neck too. Other than that, the bolts and the wires and your home free.

Why apply it to the bed?
Do you have a camper top and a pass through?
Do you think there is that much in NVH to be gained?
Remember the Butal patches that got deleted?

If you do apply that stuff to the under side of the bed, you may want to avoid the frame attachment surfaces.

1. To absorb noise from the magnaflow plus any road noise.
2. Nope, just want less noise that could/will penetrate into the cab
3. Yes. God yes!
4. Nope... I'll look into it.

I will not coat anything that makes contact with the frame, as it would probably just wear off and cause problems anywho...

Haven't got it yet. Think it's in UPS land right now. Trying to get tracking number to see if I'll get it before the weekend or what! I will take pics. Looks like some sweet stuff, I hope it works as claimed. The company is rumored to be very good at soundproofing, so we'll see if this visco-elastic polymer stuff is all it's cracked up to!

Big D you are too much! You spent a small fortune on exhaust and air intake to get more power and sound...now you are going to spend a bigger fortune to REMOVE noise?!!! You're truck is gonna end up a real slug cause it weighs 8000 pounds (before you get in ) but it will have ALL the mods!

Yep. Thats pretty crazy.

Since you already said one crazy thing... I'll say another.
You could wrap the entire exhaust in a thermo wrap type stuff to help deaden the sound...

Best I remember reading, you already have soundproofing in your cab. right? DynoMat?

Did you dynomat the overhead? Put some E-fans on there... that will quiet down the truck a bit. Wrap the intake tube in a sound deadning, heat resistant wrap....

I guess what Im trying to get at is... removing the bed and spraying crap under it is CRAZY and alot of work. How long do you seriously plan on having that truck? Till you die? Try other means of making it quieter first.

if you do it, dont cover up the drain holes in the bed, because then your truck is a piece of crap and you should trade it in!

Hey, I said it was crazy idea #185 didn't I?! Yes, I have dynamat xtreme in the doors. I don't want to continue the dynamat due to weight. This goo will cover the rest of the truck and weight the same as the dynamat in the doors...

Now, I dig the exhaust note and have grown to live with it. The CAI is nuts and completely unacceptable. Thus, I'll be starting with under the hood.

How much work is removing the bed really? Some wires, bolts & a gas pipe. Then lift. It can't be that bad. Even if I keep the truck a couple years its worth it.

I haven't pulled the bed off an '04+ yet, but I've done previous gen F150s before. Ain't nothin' to it, you may have some evap lines and whatnot clipped to the underside of the bed, and the wiring to the taillights, but after that, a couple guys on either side and off it goes.

There's a reg cab stake bed 2005 running around this area.
White, pro stake bed. It looks good. Very husky looking, like a superduty, but nicer trim.
The new model cab responds well to any bed I think.
