It's one of those accessory keypads that lets you add a keypad to a vehicle that has remote keyless entry. Its self contianed, and programs to the vehicle just like a keyfob remote does. You program your code, program it to your keyless entry, and stick it wherever you want, no wires attached.

I'm thinking it's his backup for getting in because he installed the rear LT handles with no keyhole or keypad on his front doors.

Its like taping one of your keyless remotes to your truck, but having to have a code before the unlock button is hit.

Good place to stash it. I have one new in the box, but it turns out they only work with factory keyless systems. My keyless is a Ford Deluxe alarm/keyless and no joy. They are a great idea.

Which raises a second question, what if the tailgate is up and locked? Would the pad be accessable?

But I like the idea of a "remote" located number pad, kind of 007ish. I never was fond of the stick on pad.

That is actually the only way i use it, by feel/touch with the gate up. They are times if the tailgate is down and i need to use then i will. There were some alternative mounting solutions but i think this was the best considering the surface was the flatest.
