What is the break-in duration?

What is the general concensus on the number of miles until the engine is broken in? Any limitations on RPM?

As I understand its about 1000 miles and the rpms should fluxuate. Try not to hold the rpm`s at one steady speed.

About 1000 miles, change the oil and filter at about 1500 then follow the maintenance guide.

I just drive normally for the first few thousand miles, change oil as recommended and I haven't had any engine problems with 14 new vehicles. I brake gently and don't tow for the first 500 miles. The Taurus and Sable didn't get their best fuel mileage until they got 12,000-14,0-00 miles on them.

A couple hours after I bought mine, I drove from Dallas to Little Rock, then back a couple days later. Cruise control almost all the way. I am approaching 20k and no problems as of yet.... I hope.

Honestly the best way to break in a motor is to drive/ride it how your going to drive/ride it. Its been proven if your hard on a motor during the break in period that it'll have more HP than one that you've babied.

Very true. A good precentage of racers state when the build a new motor, they let is sit at idle for 20min, drain the oil completely, fill it back up and race it.

Exactly. I usually only let it run at idle for about 5-10 minutes considering the engine is so much smaller on a motorcycle.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm getting the general consensus that "drive it like you would normally". BMW says the same thing and with the synthetic oil they don't even change the oil for 15K miles. I pretty much have given it plenty of WOT runs up to 5000 rpm in the first 2000 miles and it feels great. Thanks everyone for the input!
