Angry Cracked Windshield

Figures my new truck wouldn't stay new for too long. On the way to work yesterday, a rock flew up and put a 6 inch crack in the windshield of my new truck. Anyone have an idea of what a new windshield costs from the dealer? I'm a little hesitant to let just any ol' glass shop change it out for fear of leaking and that it won't be exactly the same as it was. I may just let the crack go for a while and see if it expands since its near the bottom and not obstructing my view. I'm sure when the weather turns cooler, it will end up expanding from the bottom up.

Brady, that should be covered under your comprehensive coverage minus what ever your deductible is. If it is more than a chip, your insurance company will pay for a new windshield. Most insurance companies dont surcharge for comp claims.

The dealer is just going to call a glass company to do it anyway. They usually don't do glass. Check your insurance. Comprehensive may cover this as a $0 deductible. Mine does. Since I started buying pick ups in 78, I have had to replace about 10-12 windshields, 3 in 1 truck. Never has cost me anything but the time to get it done.

Thanks guys, I'll check with my insurance company to see what my coverage is regarding glass. I keep a pretty high deductible to keep it cheap so it wouldn't surprise me if its not covered. Does anyone know if the replacement glass will have the F150 logo at the top like the original?

Had the same situation as you. Initially the rock did not crack the glass, but I sure heard it. By the end of the weekend it was about 8" long. Too late for the insurance to pay for it, at no cost to me. It only cost me my comp. deductible when I got it done.

I had a reputable glass shop do it, and they were able to get the Ford Autolite windshield. No hassles.

As far as getting anything done at the dealer, my stance is the dealer is only as good as the person or idiot working on it. Same stands with independent shops.

Don't know why your insurance wouldn't cover it. I have notified mine days later with no problem.

As for deductible, for glass it shouldn't matter. Even though I have a low deductible, my glass breakage part of comprehensive covers everything.

Odd that this would come up..

Yesterday some douch bag kids driving the opposite direction I was threw a hand full of pennies at my truck. After doing a 180 and chasing them (didnt catch them) I noticed my windshield was cracked so I got home and called the insurance company and they are paying 100% of the replacement / repair.

There shouldnt be a deductable on glass. When you call to get a new windshield the most important thing to ask for is OEM windshield.

OEM isn't too important, chances are if you go aftermarket, you'll get a Carlite, and they make most of the glass for a lot of manufacturers out there. I had mine replaced back in March I think with a Carlite for $341. Has the screened F150 logo on top, the Ford logos and whatnot, looks just like the Ford piece. If I had it done with the OEM Ford glass, at my cost it would have been like $470 with no appreciable difference in quality.

Dude that sucks! I'd be so infuriated. Too bad you didn't get their license number.

We had a carlite on my wifes first tahoe about 10 months ago and after 2 months the glass started seperating on the bottom passenger corner and the plastic in between the glass started wrinkeling. We traded the truck in after that but one of the sales reps from autolite told me always go with oem. This was just my experience.

I had a rock hit mine a few weeks back, within 5 minutes of it hitting it had ran a quarter of the way across my windshield! anyway, called my insurance guy and I dont have any kind of glass breakage coverage besides my normal comp, so I would have to pay my full deductable. I went by a local auto glass company and was quoted $230 plus taxes for a OEM type glass with the F-150 screened up top.
