Underhood Lights
Underhood Lights
There was a post a week or so ago about installing underhood lights. Here are mine. I used two underhood lights from 1990's Ford products I found in the junkyards. They are black platic with a 'mercury switch' built in. Ford part number E8AB-15702-AB. I remove the hood insulation support push pins and pushed the lights into the holes.

Also see my gallery for another picture of the lights and a console light I installed.
Now if the picture will come up?

I'm far from an electrician but:
Its a switch that uses mercury (liquid metal at room temp) to make contact between two poles of the switch istead of solid metal. This way when something is opened (like a hood in this case) the liquid will collect in the lowest part of the switch due to gravity and will complete the circuit. It works like an automatic switch with no buttons to push. When the hood is up the light is on, when the hood is down the light is off. They are usually, but not always, part of what ever they are controlling.
They are used a lot in older style home thermostats as well.
what were the 1990 ford products? I can't find anything under that part number on google. I want add some lights, but haven't found anything yet. Haven't really looked either.

They are on almost any Ford vehicle. I have got them from Taurases, Crown Victorias, any Lincoln vehicle. The lights have a notch on top that a clip with a post fits in and this post with push into the hood. I'll try to get a picture tonight of the light/switch.

The above picture is of the light/switch used. The wiring harness plugs into the back side of the light. Backside is the left end of the light in the picture. I cut off the black portion of the light sticking up. The white pin piece pushes up into the holes in the inner hood panel and help to hold the hood insulation up.
