Speaker replacement advise needed

I've noticed that if I turn the volume up on my stock radio, that the bass will totally drop out after a short time. If I turn the radio off for a few seconds, and then turn it back on, the bass comes back on. I've thought about doing a speaker upgrade to improve sound qualtiy, but am wondering if those that have swapped out the factory speakers have experienced this problem.

In short, do I need a new head unit for better sound, or can I just upgrade the speakers without having my bass drop out at louder volume levels?

TIA for any help.

If you change your H/U you will notice a huge difference in my oppinion. But some people want to keep the stock H/U and in that instance just toss some decent speakers in and the quality will get better. However if you are only changing it due to the bass cutting out you might have a bum H/U I dont know didnt keep mine in long enough.

I installed new component Polk speakers with my factory head unit, and they are alot better than the audiophilke speakers that came with my truck.
But as mentioned above i would have your head unit checked out as it sounds like is is defective.

How much $cash are you looking to spend ??
Speakers are the first step in making it sound better BUT it still doesn't compare to also installing a quality H/U. Just my $.02 but the Alpine H/U's sound soooo good !!!

Warranty

If your Stock HU is installed and you are getting the bass or the treble to drop out randomly, that is a warranty item. My wife's 05 had that problem, we took it in they ordered up a new radio/replaced it and never had that problem since. the sound quality has been better since they replaced it too. I think the old one was just F'd.

Thanks for the input so far. My systems acting almost like it's heat related due to driving loud volume. I had a system with two amps in another truck and if the amp got too hot it would just shut down. Seems like my system is doing the same thing, but the only thing that shuts down is the bass. May have to approach the service writer at work to see if he thinks we should warranty it.

The only reason I'm trying to stay factory H/U is to maintain the factory appearance. Since I have to leave it parked outside at night, I don't want a shiny new deck to attract the wrong kind of attention.
