Question Af1

Just installed my birthday present in the form of the AF1 intake. I had a few issues with the install but nothing too serious. I had to Dremel out the slot for the MAF. From the search I did, seems I'm not the first to do this. I also had to enlarge the holes that secure the heat shield to the fender well. They were way off, I had to file almost 1/4" in each direction to get the screws in.

After the install, I took the truck out for a spin and I must say, its pretty impressive. The sound is absolutely addictive. It makes the truck sound bad-as$. I have a Gibson SI/SO (known for being the quietest on the aftermarket) and the truck now sounds like a Mustang GT.

Here's where the problem started... When I went to re-tighten everything I discovered the air filter had fallen off. I tightened the sh$t out of it and test drove it again. Filter fell off again...

A search turned up:
1. Expanding the tube... I don't have access to a pipe expander.
2. Roughing up the inside of the filter with sand paper. I don't see how that will help, but I will try it.
3. Cleaning the filter and tube with alcohol and then hitting it with hairspray. I've heard stranger things so what the hell, I'll give that a try too...

Any other suggestions???

KC-10 FE,

The tube and the filter base have oil on them, especially the filter base. Wipe the tube and inside of the filter base down with rubbing alcohol. Let it dry and put the filter back on and tighten it down. Make sure it is square on the tube. Hope this helps.

They shouldnt have a problem returnin it man. Box it all back up and just return it, dont tell em nuthin, just say wrong part for your vehicle you cant use it.

so your wife bought you something that costs $300 and you have to do all these modifications to it to make it work/fit right. I was just stating the obvious based on your problems and all the other member's past problems with these kits that their quality control sucks. I would take exx's advice and return it and either try for another one, or get the Airaid. I'm sure your wife will understand.

Honestly, I don't think the AFI is all it is cracked up to be but Im not going to bash anyone who buys it and who recieves it as a gift. The problem with the filter popping off is probally because the metal is oily from the filter oil, as stated here take the filter off and wipe the edges down with rubbing alcohol and the intake tube, you should be good to go after that. Tell us how it works out for you.

Thats very strange, I wonder if they sent you the wrong size cone filter to go on there Mine was snug on the tube before I ever tightened the clamp....I love how people bash the quality of this kit without even seeing it...all the materials seem very well made, the tube itself looks indestructable..I'm sure every single one of the Airraid kits is flawless yea right....This thing looks sweet under the hood too...

With the tuner and exhaust the seat of the pants test is at least 25 horses to the rear wheels.......this thing hauls a$$ now........

Quit b!tchin just cuz you dont have an Airforce kit

Ain't that the truth??? That tube must weigh 3 pounds & is SS; I think I you could weld this thing onto your exhaust to use a tail-pipe, it looks that strong. There is no way the Air Raid is more durable than this. If nobody has fitment issues with the AR, great... The AF1 still looks better and I believe the claim of 25 RWHP. I actuallly laid 20 ft of rubber and chirped 2nd gear after I installed it (I'm running the Troyer 93 octane Max Perf tune at the moment).

I was wondering about the filter size also. I have an AF1 on my 4.6 and the quality of mine is excellent. However, on the kits for the 5.4 there have been way too many people having to do their own modifications on the kit to get it to fit.

I remember reading another post on this site that the poster had called AF1 and told them about the fitment problems he and others on this site were having and the AF1 tech said they had never heard of the problem. That was probably about 3 weeks ago. Well, now that they heard of it, it appears that have done nothing about it. Since these things are on back order I doubt they have a warehouse full of prebuilt kits. If there is a problem they need to look into it and stop sending out low quality kits. It appears that the problems should be relatively easy to fix since most people have been able to correct the problems on their own.

I installed my AF1 Saturday morning. I had to, likewise, Dremel the opening for the sensor. No big deal. Air box went on with a little hassle but no mods needed. I wanted to install the filter as far out to the end of the tube as possible and it does have a tendency to want to slip off. But following the tips from previous threads I used a 5/16 socket versus screwdriver to make sure all clamps were very snug. I did not disconnect the battery during install and did not have any CEL.
