Steering Vibe...Still? Preload on the rack?
not to bash ford, but go drive another brand of truck and tell me if it shakes and vibrates like all of ours do. you know it really gets under my skin that ford thinks they make a quality vehicle, yet everyone i know that has one has all the problems we all talk about. Do you think that if Mercedes or BMW had a problem like this it would go on like this? I think not. I think Ford needs to take a step back before they start losing the selling war and realize they have a genuine issue with these trucks and stop trying to "band-aid" all of our problems.
Well, they replaced my rack today and I have to say that it did not appreciably change the nibble. 68-73 mph it is still noticeable.
Service mgr wants me to put my OE tires/rims back on and drive it again. He thinks I have a balance problems with my 20s. They are all road forced to between 10-22 lb which should be good enough. You should be able to put an quality set of wheels/tires on these trucks and not have to worry about this crap. I'm going to have tire shop re-check the road force of all of my 20s. Will probably put the 17s back on just to see how they behave.

(My Journalism Skills) Too bad to hear that. What about the preload? Anybody know how/where the adjustment is and what tools are required?
Anybody have this 65-75mph steering wheel shake (or nibble or wobble) on 05's?

I need to drive it for a couple of days more before I say that the rack replacement is or is not an improvement. The steering does feel good. BTW, when I asked about the preload the Service mgr told me that there is no steering preload adjustment... "set at the factory". Who can you believe these days? I trust Quintin's judgement on these things, though. He works on 'em every day. Haven't heard of too many 05 owners that have this issue. There are loads of threads on the topic and it mostly points to 04s.
i have a 05 and i get a little shudder or nibble on the highway, but it not too bad and it seems to come and go .

I took my truck in for a few problems and told them I was experiencing a steering wheel shimmy. They said they were going to look at it and told me they're was a revised steering rack for 05. I was glad I didn't have to tell them that.

In fact I find it the most pronounced on newly paved roads - there is no roughness to the road that interrupts the steering wheel shake.
My farming cousin (8 pickups, 3 farm trucks, 10 irrigation motors - all Fords but thankfully only 1 '04 F150) did some calling this morning. His service manager says this new F150 has "been a black eye for Ford." There isn't a fix, but the steering rack and cab mounts (the first time I heard that) are helping customers. He says the new rack helps in about 3/4 of the cases.
Have you all called Ford to let them know you are having this problem? I'm sure the reports trickle into Detroit, but I don't think it can hurt if we tell them the situation directly and that a lot of us are eagerly awaiting a fix.

i havent had time to bring it in yet it really is not that ba my hand just vibrates a liitle and i only have 2500 mile on it so i will give it a bit more time to see what happens .
if it ends up being a real problem i will just get rid of it and buy something else

Something is loosening up in the front end somewhere. I wish I knew what though.
Last week my dealer replaced the steering rack, and front rotors and it is a little better now. I will be get my new rims and tires rechecked to make sure they are balanced properly before i go in just to make sure i didnt lose a weight or something.
The 2005 f150 i drove while they were attempting to fix mine drove flawlessly, even though it was only an XLT screw.

Well I hear that the steering rack replacement was NOT the fix for one guy. Did it fix it for others? A dealership in OK tells me it helps in 2/3 of the cases. Could the vibration be somewhere else (maybe not in the steering, wheels, or tires) and just work its way to the steering wheel?

My 05 shakes now after new tires.
Well I just started a topic on this cause I didnt find this tread. Yeah I have an 05 screw that now has 3000 miles and I just got new rims and tires. 325/60/18's on and the steering was fine before and when I drove it home I thought I was going to break something it was shaking so damn bad. It has gotten a little better, but it is mostly around 40-50 mph. I guess I havent gotten above 60mph so I dont know about higher speeds. And the steering is just all over the place when I hit bumps now though. I thought it was cause of the wider tires and was going to have to deal with it from that. Now I know its something else.
