Sunoco 94 Ultra.

But I ran regular 87 octane from Exxon before putting in the tuning.

I'd never run the cheapest I could find. Those "no-name" stations scare me. But there is nothing wrong with a good name brand 87 octane gas

Yeah, just 87 from shell, chevron, or any of those known brands.

The truck is designed to run on 87. You don't need anything else unless you are running hi-octane tuning or certain mods.

Don't turn this into another oil debate thread, do a search instead!

Not completely true. I had a station for 4 years and ten months. You can buy about a dozen to two dozen blends, with additives, or without.
Some distributers take poor care of their ground tanks and/or trucks.
One outfit I dealt with had a problem with their drivers doing flushes after delivering JP4 to the airbase.
They would leave some of the jet fuel (basically kerosene) in their tanks, as much as 50-100 gallons of it, and then top up with 91 octane.
Not good. They would then go to 85 octane for the discount station down town, and dump about half of it in the midrange tank.
A fully loaded tanker is 9600 gallons. This can be split into two tanks, or one tank and a split load on some rigs.
So you can get 4800, 2400, and 2400, three different blends on the same truck.
Not unusual to get a drop of 4800 from the rear tank, then have the guy go down the street with the other split.
My split might be 91 octane, the other two splits might be 85 and 89 or 85 and 87.
Truck doesn't mean a thing.
It's what’s in the tank, and how well it's maintained.

Another fun fact, unless you live in a VERY regulated state, you might have rusty ground tanks, water filled tanks, etc. etc. at any station.

Even here in this state there is a huge difference in tank maintainance from station to station.

The inspectors are few and far between and you can get a tanker of 'not so good gas' from any distributor, that he will offer to the discount stations for half price. Heck, I've even had them pull up, and bargain with me. I never bought for cash, but if I had, I could have cleared a thousand bucks on a truck load, cold hard profit. God knows what was wrong with that load...

A small station pumps 40 thousand gallons a month, a busy corner, 10-30 times as much, so if you split 4800 gallons of questionable fuel into a 10 or 15k tank, you can still sell it without the customers being much wiser.
Then a week out, there is no trace of it to be inspected.

Like the owner cares.

I was inspected three times. Once just a month after I opened, once when I had to pull my tanks for environmental laws (they were perfect, but the law said they had to be pulled, to check... and exactly one surprise visit.

Surprise in that I had two weeks notice they were in the area checking pump accuracy. I got six separate phone calls warning me, even one from my biggest competitor.

Buy from someone that has something to lose if they pump bad gas, buy from a place that is clean and neat, shows there is somebody in charge, and if you do get a bad batch of gas, don't go there again. I personally know many of the owners in my area. Thus I buy from Costco…
Chris

Mine was a sarcastic response to the "debate of the week", I thought folks would pick up on that.

I kinda figured it was sarcasm but there will be someone who will pick it up and run with it ad nauseum.

With the compression ratio of the new 5.4 you can actually run what ever grade you want. Owners manual calls for 87, I run 89. You can burn premium if you choose although you probably won't see any benefit. I find 89 is good when towing because it keeps ping to a minimum and gives a little more grunt when getting the load moving.

It all comes down to what you want to pay to drive your rig everyday.
