Reverse (Backup) Video Camera Mod Completed

I added a reverse video camera to my Video/Stereo/Navigation unit. This significantly reduces the blind spot we have while backing our trucks. It came out pretty nice if I do say so myself. Not a mod for everyone, but for those with a video head unit it's a good thing to have.

Check it out by clicking picture below, navigate to Mods -> Sound & Video -> Reverse Video Camera.

Comments about this mod in this thread please.

Cheers!

Wow very nice! That 7015 picture looks great! Mine will be here tommorow!!!!! I like the "test" of the install with the stool

EDIT: I looked through your different installs for the Kenwood unit.....very nice. I have the 710 MP3 KEG on the way also and I was debating on putting it under the rear seat or somewhere else. I wonder if it would fit behind the dash as you thought about putting yours.

The CX910 was too long front to back with the cartridge installed to go into the dash. I don't know about the 710.

That's a good question. The navigation system required that signal, so I actually tapped into it early last March with the pink wire you see. I hooked my Reverse camera into the pink wire I already added. The wiring diagram says black with a pink stripe. Use a voltmeter to be sure.

"How cool is that?!" I'd like to have one installed to zero in on my hitch ball for hooking up my trailer. Now that would be all right.

That actually was my goal (at the height of my receiver drop hitch, the view misses the ball by 10 inches.) Perhaps I will get a chance to reengineer the mount at a future date. Perhaps someone else will reengineer it and I'll just copy.

Nice work Myst and you have an excellent website.

Doing all that work (mods) takes a lot of time - capturing the step-by-step with the photos and write-ups has to take even longer.

That was exactly what I was thinking too. And I have to say that Myst's mods and the way he writes them up is awesome..

What is the best way to install the diode? Just solder it in line. Will the heat from the solder iron damage the diode?

I soldered mine on a small prototyping printed circuit board and soldered wires to that. A soldering iron is hot enough to melt silicon, so yes it can damage the diode. Solder quickly!

Edit: You could crimp the diode inline with solderless butt connectors if you wanted to.

Got a Coleman coldheat cordless soldering tool last birthday, dang thing does work.
You can solder a diode to the wire in a second, and not get the diode very warm.
I usually use a 15 watt pencil for small work, and a Weller for car wiring, but this little doodad works pretty much like they show in the TV adds. Quick fine soldering with no cord.
