3rd brake Light Leaking
3rd brake Light Leaking
I have noticed my 3rd brake light was leaking (actually POURING) since i installed my leather seat covers a few weeks back. So i take it to the dealer since it was raining today and more expected because of TS Cindy. I took the dealer shuttle to my office (about 4 blocks away) and I see the dealer parking my truck in their remote lot OUTSIDE IN THE RAIN!!!!! WTF????
I am thinking about giving them a call..

I'd call them too.... that's probably how they think they should check for the leak instead of taking your word for it and looking at the water stains you
probably got inside the cab by now ..

Mine was leaking also, there's a TSB for it, 04-21-20 I think. It's fine now after they ordered the new assembly and replace it.
Now I can finish my cloth to leather swap out for the rear seats
Mine was leaking too. While waiting to get it into the shop I taped it with 2" black pressure tape. It won't harm the finish. The dealer replaced the light assy on mine.

Realized mine was leaking too on a return fishing trip through a heavy thunderstorm. My brother, who was sitting the back goes, "Uh, I think you've got a leak in your ceiling"....as a steady stream of drips are leaking down on top of my back seat! The next day, the truck was taken to the dealer and they replaced the light assembly as well.
With the extremely large number of occurances with this situation, I have to wonder if the replacement assemblies aren't going to end up faulty either? I'd like to know if it's an issue with the original part, a chassis design causing a seal to tear, or what?

The leaky ones had the seal in the wrong place...at least mine did.
I was on a trip from FL to Cape cod and I noticed it during the trip. I took off the 3rd brake light assembly and you could see where the seal was placed below where it would meet up with 2 holes in the metal and water would get to the holes before it would get to the seal.
I hadn't noticed the leak before since I seem to always park downhill and the water flows forward. The time I noticed it I was parked going uphill and the water would sort of pool around the brake light and it was there long enough to start dripping in.
The TSB says there's assembly replacement for it since you can't really get the old seal off (I tried to re-position the seal in a parking lot and found it just tears).

This is how I fixed mine recently

TEST provided by: Quintin __ close all the windows; turn the blower on high/normal air/spray soapy water
around the 3rd brake light. Look for bubbles.

As you can see, I got the big wet problem brewing. It’s been raining hard nearly everyday and yesterday evening
it leaked big time.
After pulling the light off it was obvious why it was leaking. The foam gasket wasn’t applied straight across the top of the lenses and consequently less than half the width of the gasket was actually in position to make the seal.
I cleaned the foam gasket off the lenses assembly and ran a bead of Permatex clear RTV silicone in place of the gasket.

Crap...wouldn't ya know it...at 32k miles, now I just noticed the same leak being talked about here. Hasn't rained in weeks and now it starts raining, wife was in the back seat with the baby, you know the rest of the story. Guess I'll try to get it in this Wed. Thing that sucks is that it's supposed to pour the rain the next 2 days...and it hasn't rained in weeks
Well now I'm pissed! I took the truck in this morning (it's raining and my truck is leaking). I told them exactly what's going on and surely with this large dealer they've seen this before? Well, the guy is saying they'll confirm if that's it or not and THEN they'll order the part and I'll have to come back. Screw that. I'm not leaving a $35,000 truck out in the rain (I have no garage) to get soaked. I'll pull the damn light off myself and put silicone in the holes to fix the problem. No need to silicone the entire light assembly to the truck...just plug the holes. That's my thinking anyway. It can't be that hard. Every time I go to the dealer, it's a pain because I need to get a ride back to work...and then a ride to the dealer. Then they don't have it ready so I'm late getting home (have a 8 month old baby at home and my wife likes for me to be home on a schedule because it helps out with everything). I thought they'd have enough sense to not schedule me in if they didn't have a light assembly in stock...knowing that there's rain in the forecast for the next few days! Grrrrr!
