Possible factory HID conversion???

Well a buddy of mine just bought a 2005 Saleen Mustang and I was looking at the specs online (I thought I wanted one too until I saw the price...I think I will stick with the Z06 plans) and it turns out it has HID headlights. Well being the Mustang shares the same headlight bulbs as the F150 (9008s)...I wonder if this is a possbile source for an easy (or easier) HID retrofit for our trucks? Somebody with more time than me look into it!!!!

It'll probably cost a small fortune to get ahold of those though...only place would be a dealer. Unless you get lucky and someone recks their saleen very very fast and doesn't reck it from the front.

You would have to retrofit the reflector housing into your trucks housing for correct output. Simply putting a hid rebased capsule inside a halogrn housing causes way too much glare and too much stray light everywhere.
If youre going to retrofit a reflector in there, might as well do a projector retrofit as the output is much more controlled, wide spread and cleaner. If you notice, all previous HID models of cars are all now switching to projectors.

Forgot to add that if the mustang uses OEM HIDs, then it doesnt use a halogen socket base type. It was converted to use D2R (reflector based HID burner) so you cant take it and insert it into the truck. It will be like taking a G35 sedans reflector or any other reflector based HID system and using in your truck. All OEM HID uses D2R (P32-D) bases.

Hmmm, we have a QX4 Infiniti that isn't projectors and the HIDs are awesome!!! Better output than a BMW by far

So basically the best option is to buy projectors and then Hella or some manufacture HID bulbs, ballasts and harness? What type bulbs should you use with the e55 or e46 projectors?...any suggestions on a good brand too?

All OEM HID bulbs are either D2S (projector type) or D2R (reflector type). Philips and Osram are the only 2 who make OE grade HID burners. All others are knock offs and have a high failure rate.

As for connections, once the projectors are installed, you connect the bulbs to the ballast wire, and wire a harness to power the ballasts. The harness should tap or connect to your OE harness, triggering a relay to switch battery power directly to the ballasts.

If I can get a set of the Salleen HIDs and the reflectors I would go that route....IMO the reflector type look so much better (with the lights off) than the projector type.

It all depends on the installation of projectors. Its much harder to get a nice looking retrofit with such large openings, but if you find the right materials, it can turn out great.
You dont have to stick with Saleen HID because they will sue the same hardware as other OE HID systems. You could use a reflector out of another vehicle and retrofit them into your housings.

When you say the reflector...you are talking about round silver part behind the bulb right? Wouldnt the donor car have to have about the same size reflector as the one in my truck now? It seems like the one in the Mustang is close to the same size...thats why I thought it may be the best fit. I am going to really look at them when I see him next weekend and compare them to my stockers.

Yeah, let us know how that turns out. Anyone know any other cars that have HID reflectors that be the easiest to retrofit into the truck?

In this case size (and shape) matters to a certain extent. You could use older LS430 reflectors which are rather large, IS300, and some other applications.

Do you know the diameter of both of those off hand? It's between one of those two set ups and just doing projectors for me. I plan on doing after I see those pics of yours when you're done with your conversion. Then I'm going to visit HIDPLANET and contact someone through the website email to make my purchase.
