Drop shackles and hauling dirt bikes

I was looking at picking up some of the 2" DJM drop shakles w/shims to level out my 05 2wd XL scab, but I'm worried about hauling my dirt bikes. I haul 2 450s that weigh about 250-275 a piece. Would adding the drop shackles hinder my ride when loading up the bikes or any heavier loads? I'd hate to have the truck sag.

I've done a search, and couldn't find any answers regarding my specific question within the plethora of already existing drop-shakle posts. Thanks for your help.

Ted

I don't know about dirt bikes, but I know with my utility trailer hooked up to my Lariat Supercab with the 2" DJM shackles, the truck definitely sits lower in the rear than the front. I've never weighed it, but if I was to guess, I'd say that trailer's around 1300-1500 lbs. I didn't notice any degridation in ride quality though. At stock ride height, the trailer would level the truck out perfectly.

Dont worry, 500 lbs of dirt bikes is nothing for this truck. I have hauled 2 dirt bikes and gear in the back of mine and it didnt lower the rear end one little bit. So even with the 2" drop it wont affect your suspension with that amount in it. Now if you go over say a 1000 lbs it might , I just dont know about that. Im sure there are some on here with the drop you are wanting and could be of more help. i say load em up and go riding.

What kind of 450s weigh that much!?

They weigh more about the range of 220-230 lbs.

You're right if they're MX. If he's hauls trailies for instance, CRF450X is 250 lb., that battery and hot start pack on the pounds.

Anyway I don't know why you'd have an issue with the drop unless when loaded the bumpstops are close to the axel. Even if they were though you could always add airbags.

Whatever you do however it's good to see fellow off roaders on the board

Theres always the option to add a spring helper or airbags for hauling.

I tow an 8 x 14 Zieman trailer with the following: CFR250, XR250, 400 EX, AND 300 EX when hooking up the trailer it is hard to even notice any difference in the rear. I don't have DJM's, but based on the little if any drop, i would think you would be ok.

Cool, thanks for input guys.

I've got 2 yz450fs. I added a little extra weight to account for gear & fuel and camping equipment. I think I'll probably go with the drop shackles. Maybe I'll throw both of the bikes in the back of the truck and do a little sag measurement.

No prob, go have fun.

For those that wondered about the weight of 450s, the lightest MX version is 231 lbs without fuel. I dont ride without fuel, so with fuel they weigh closer to 245 lbs because liquid weighs a lot. Now with the trail 450s, the lightest one is about 252 lbs without fuel, etc. BTW the Honda CRF450X weighs in at 259 lbs without fuel. So hes on the right track as for as his weights go for the YZ450Fs, also if there have been any mods for trail riding the weight goes up, like if you add skid plates or hand guards etc.

I still dont think you will have any probs out of the suspension on your truck even with the 2" drop.
