How do you get carbon off of exhaust tips?

When I first got my side exit exhaust installed, it wasnt a problem getting the carbon off of the stainless steel tips, but now, I cant get the stuff to come off. I havent been able to wash my truck for a few weeks because of the weather, and when I attempt to clean off the tips, the carbon will not come off. I tired using an old toothbrush and some orange cleaner with no results. I am afraid if i used a steel brush it might scratch the tips....

Any suggestions?

How extensive is it? Just a spec or two or bad?

My favorite polish is Heavy Metal Polish. It works wonders on my tip on my SISO Magna ... For heavy carbon buildup, I'd go with, no less than, medium (green).

RP is the acknowledged detail expert here, but my 2 cents is try using some Never Dull. If you are not familiar with it, it comes in a can and it is a impregnated wadding (kind of like a can full of lint). A little goes a long way.

It took off some tar and the carbon from my tip. Good luck!

What does carbon build up look like? I have a little bit of brown discoloration on my tip. It looks like a faint brown haze. Is that what carbon built up looks like?

cabon build up is from your exhaust, its black, like you know black smoke that comes from a fire? like on the mantle of a fireplace... you get the carbon on it... i cleaned my tips up, it was a lot of elbow grease but i just used some random chrome polish

carbon build up

I use a very fine steel wool on my chrome tips and it works well for me. I would consult with Rockpick however, if I were you.

I agree with ke7065, NeverDull works great on my SS tip. It is non abrasive and cleans up Carbon and tar really easy. On my last truck I even used it to polish the billet grill after the winter road salt had discolered it.

You may want to try fireplace glass cleaner. Works great for that. Try it on an spot that isn't real obvious first.

As well as what has been mentioned above, Mothers sells a Power Ball thing that attaches to a power drill that really works awesome. I used it on mine after RP mentioned it to me in a earlier post. Mine are like new, and i never polished them for the entire winter. As well it works great on rims.
