Magnaflow Cat Back
Magnaflow Cat Back
I considering buying the magnaflow cat back #16612 system for my 04 Screw. Has anyone with this system had any issues with the check engine light coming on and or any warranty problems? Also how hard was the install?
Thanks

for Magnaflow there's lots of input already posted and check out the Exhaust Systems forum too.

16612 installed on mine over a thousand miles ago with zero problems.
The installation isn't too bad but, allow yourself a few hours, start to finish, to accomplish the task.
Mine would've gone much quicker if it weren't for removing the old one (let silicone spray/WD40 be your friend here! Douse the hangers to remove your old one!!!).
Feel free to email me if you have any questions on your install. It's pretty straight forward though... an extra set of hands can help!

Magnaflow 16612 On The Way
Going to install the 16612 on my 05 XLT Flareside. Going with the SISO for a little more low end for towing and still keep a throaty note like the FlowMaster. Have heard the way to go with the bolt on is to forego the flimsy stainless u-bolts that come with the system and go with the band style clamps. Band clamps are supposed to seal better and not deform the pipe for easier future removal. The downside is they can only be used once (but most bolts are one shot anyway) as they stretch. They run about 8 bucks at NAPA.

What "flimsy...u-bolts"? My 15834 sure didn't come with any flimsy u-bolts...my clamps were heavy duty works of engineering.

Have read a lot of posts saying the bolts tend to shear off before they are tight enough to seal the joint. Probably a lot of folks not using anti seize on the bolt before tightening, but I have read the stainless bolts that come with the kit are being replaced with reinforced ones from the auto parts store when they snap. At any rate, even if the stainless bolts are works of art, no way can they beat a nice set of band clamps!
raalden...I'm not sure what your definition of a 'band clamp' is since I'm aware of a least two (2) styles. However, the Magnaflow instruction sheet identifies the clamps that came with my #15834 SI/DO as BAND CLAMPS. They are 1 1/4 inches wide and as sturdy as a military tank recovery vehicle. I repeatedly tightened/loosened the single bolt/nut with an airtool while adjusting the aft pipes and tips with no issues of bolt breakage or inadequate joint fit/seal. They are definitely well made, practical, and sturdy and not of the 'flimsy U-bolt' type. I think you can set your mind at ease in using the system clamps. IMO it would be a needless expense to replace them with any other product.

Sounds like they have gotten the word! I eagerly await the arrival of my 16612 system to see what fasteners they are using!

RP...a reasonable conclusion would be that the 15834 I installed has a band clamp and the 16612 you installed has a U-bolt clamp.

RP...I'm not trying to belabor an issue that may just be a matter of semantics, but take a look at the thread below by jdflhr entitled 'Magnaflow cat back question' and examine the photo on page one by roboots21...is that a 'band clamp' (as labeled by Magnaflow) or a U-bolt clamp?
