Angry Whine in Reverse!?

Backing out of the hospital, the mall, and a car lot. I hear a whine in reverse. Its not there in any other gear, only in reverse. I know what the truck sounds like in reverse and its a different kind of whine. Its never made the noise until yesterday. I checked the brakes thinking maybe it was the emergency brake but they weren't abnormally hot.

I searched and came up with nothing?

Doesn't nearly every tranny whine in reverse depending on the speed? Unless it's really loud and obnoxous I'd chaulk it up to normal behavior.

...No its not the whine that the tranny is supposed to make.

Its totally different than how it was before. Its really loud and I can hear it over my stereo and Im talking about backing up out of a parking space. I could never hear my tranny whine in reverse going that slow. Now when I would go 10 mph I can understand, but Im talking like 1 mph and its obnoxiously loud.

Apparently you guys arn't listening. ITS NOT NORMAL. I know what the tranny sounds like and this isn't right. If you heard it you would think there is something wrong. It sounds like something is grabbing and causing a whine. Almost like the emergency brakes are on but the motor is just overpowering them.

Do you really expect people to diag a noise problem over the internet?

Here's the first thing my transmission tech says on the phone:
" I can't diag noises or shifting problems over the phone! I need to drive it and listen to it."

Peeve number two: if at all possible drive with the tech or service advisor. They may not know what you are hearing.Your description may not be accurate or complete enough.

ThumperMX113,

Sounds like you have a geo metro stuck under your truck and when you back up its dragin it along... Check for that first..and then take it to the dealer.

I have the same problem with my truck. I noticed it about a month ago. It doesn't do it all the time but when I back up it sounds like there is a giant tuning fork in my rear end

I noticed that mine started doing this today as well. It almost sounds like the brakes are dragging when I start to back up.
