Weird Problem last night

I have not seen this one posted here yet.
I have a 04 lariet, no mods. PCM upgraded about 6 months ago.

Last night, I started to pass a van running 35 in a 55, floor it, when the engine got to about 4000 RPM it was like it hit the rev limiter, took my foot off the gas and tried it again, same thing. After finalily getting around the van, I put the trunk in netrual and reved the motor, it went 5000 RPM no problem. I have not lights or messages on the console. After I got home, I checked everything out, pulled the airfilter to check to see it if was stopped up (you never know what gets sucked up to it), check the oil level, checked trans level, every thing was good. Started the truck backup and went on another test drive, no problems this time.

Anyone else ran across this?

I wish it was a floor mat or something under the gas petal, but it would not cause the motor to go to a rev limiter type state, it just would not have full power.

It's in the way you stomped the pedal. The PCM is programmed to limit rev's under certain full throttle conditions.

Probably saved you some damage due to over revving in too high a gear!

I put it to the floor a couple of times a week and have never seen this. When I floored it, it down changed a gear and was around 3000 RPM so no where close to 5000 RPM. But you might be right about the PCM, it may have got screwed up and started limiting the throttle, and corrected it self when I shut the engine off. I thought it was odd that I did not have a message or a light on somewhere.

It was embrassing when it happend, V8 F150 can barely pass early 90's minivan.

Not low on gas, it never gets below 1/4 tank, I had just filled up when it started happening. I replaced the fuel filter and air filter, then put in water remover, no go. So I drained the gas to put in my lawn mowers, filled up again at BP, drove it three days, then press on it a little, not floored, same thing.

When I took it in last night the guy at the service department told me: "you know they have a rev limiter that causes this", I told him "I know but not at 3800 to 4000 RPM, it is around 5000 RPM, and besides it would change gears before that wouldn't it?" Normally I have no problems at this dealership, but that kinda concerned me. I will wait to see what they find today.

They did put me in a new 05 XLT F150, but it has a 4.6 and 3.55 gears, I feel sorry for you guys that have this combonation.

Where's TRITONXLT when you need him? He's had every problem imaginable... and some I can't imagine.

I would love for somebody to give me some insite to what the hell is wrong. It drives me nuts not knowing. I would guess it has to do with the drive by wire system.

you'll find that the drive by wire is good and bad. The truck is programmed to prevent you from killing it. From the pogrammed break-in to the restricted power output. What this means to you is this engine should outlast any from Chev, Dodge or Nissan as it won't allow you to overdo it.

I will have to double check, but 4,000 RPM, are you sure? If you were going between 35 and 55 mph, the truck would be in 2nd gear. Floored in second, what is the shift point? Like I say, I will have to double check, but the shift point is right around 4,000. It sounds like the truck wasn't shifting and you indeed hit the limiter, at least for 2nd gear.
