First Look: '05, FIVE SPEED

Whooo hooo, went down to visit my cousin and he says there is a local ford dealer with a stick shift 05 F150, I call BS till we were there.

Well what do you know, reg cab, short bed, green, XL, 4x2, 4.2L, FIVE SPEED!!!

Got the keys and a dealer plate, and that thing was sweet. Just as fast as our '97 F-150, (but it is lighter). The clutch felt smooth, braked nice, and that tranny was tight and right.

Then just for grins and giggles, drove an identical truck cept for it being a 4.6L auto. It was slower....

I'll get the pics up shortly.

I would expect the 4.6L auto to be slower than the 4.2L 5 Speed Manual. Although, for these heavy trucks I STILL have to ask people why they are looking at the smaller engines. IMO 5.4+ is the only way to go.

GLad you enjoyed the ride though. No matter what size engine, they are nice trucks.

Engine definitely different looking than the 5.4L.
So is that truck the base of all base models?

Looks really nice, wish I could have waited for the 5-speed but that wasn't possible. Just something to look forward to when its time to trade off.

Yep, has AC though, If it was 4x4, we would buy it, but looks like we might order one in the summer, maybe.

Its the XL with a tach. Think that the fivespeed puts that there. The XL 4.6L auto didnt have a tach.

My previous F-150 had the 4.2, and current has the 4.6. (automatics)
Stick or no stick, ive owned both, would not go back to the 4.2.

thats the frist stick shift F150 out of the new ones that I have seen! I think a lot of people like to drive these trucks with stick shift, but to bad you can't get it with the V-8, that that would be just great!! Is stick shift a little better on gas in these trucks??

I didn't believe it at first, didnt even trust the site discription either, until I was there, and then I took pics so yall would believe me.

What I love about sticks is that YOU have the control to be super thrifty by short shiftin and gettin crazy gas milage, or windin it out and gettin crazy fast in a crazy fast time.

HANDSHAKERS FOREVER

Depends on how you drive. In theory they are suppose to be a little better. Maybe 1 or 2 MPG.

There is less drag and waste with a stick shift because you are not using fluid to move the vehicle but rather gears and mechanical linkage. Also, untill the torque converter clutch engages, there is a certain amount of slipping occuring all the time that is wasted engergy in the form of heat. That is why a stick shift gets better fuel economy and less drivetrain loss over an auto.
