It's a pain with a 5 speed but the 5 speed F150's tend to have a very high first gear, lots of clutch slipping just to get going. Since they used the 300-6 in F250's I actually investigated getting a ZF 5 speed from an F250 and swapping it behind the 300-6 in my old F150, just because the transmission (Mazda?) was geared so poorly for even no load, from a start (I believe too that the truck came with highway gears). Though OD was nice.

It's actually not the wheels that bother me on the XL... it's the Hancook tires. Nothing says American like Korean tires on an American truck?!?!?
Everybody thats looked at my truck says "who the heck makes Hancook?" Thats alright, as soon as I get my sales tax paid I will be on the hunt for new wheels and tires!

I had a 99'ram shorty sport with a 5sp and the 5.2ltr. It was the funnest truck I had ever had. I had flowmaster and intake and it simply hauled off the line. It wasn't stripped either it had all the interior options plus the sport option. I would have bought a F150 5sp if it were available in the V8 so I could tow more weight (soon to have big boat). I love 5spds, but the general public doesn't, also when I sold my dodge it was a long process as no one wanted the 5sp.

The M5OD isn't the greatest choice for pulling, as it is geared towards more light duty driving. But don't misunderstand, that comparison is against the heavy duty ZF5. Before I got the diesel, that 97 pulled some pretty big trailers that might have put me over the GVWR a little bit.

By the way, I think XLs are cool, but what can I say, I guess I'm one of them spoiled XLT boys...

I test drove an 05 V6 with the manual 5 speed yesterday. At first I told the dealer I wasn't interested because the last F150 I tested with a manual was super clunky. The current one is OK as far as clunkiness - it sort of drives like a car as far as easy shifting but it's not like a towing manual with a granny first gear. 1st is just like on a car. I could see it would be pretty hard to get a heavy load started up a hill. Anyway I rejected it because a manual killed the towing rating compared to an auto.
