How much better can Ford make this truck?
I beg to differ...
Every time I have put my 92 bronco against another, it is just as fast as a 351 auto, and leaves 302s behind.
When I put our 97 against 5.4Ls, it is right there with them, and just like example one, leaves 4.6L autos behind.
The 4.2L stick I test drove this morning was faster than the identically optioned 4.6L auto I also test drove this morn.
Your comments please...

I think they were different beds too. I think the F150 bed was more tapered than the 250.
But they did have the same steering wheel and power window buttons.

the 04 and 04 S.Duty trucks do not have the same cab, and yes the pick up boxs are not the same, as well *** the doors. .97 to 03 cabs, tail lights, R bumpers and doors, windsheild are the same...just for the hell of it I drove a reg cab 250 with the 6.0 truck was hard to give back, way way way more interior room.and way way way more power and way way way more expensive. and I'm getting off track here.....the f-150 is a great truck.

could be. i've never taken measurements myself. i'm just going by what i've been told by people that needed to make ladder racks for these trucks.

Just my 2 cents.

With an automatic you just steer and go, with a stick everytime you clutch and shift you lose momentum. You then have to regain that ground once you complete the shift. Meanwhile the automatic just keeps on going right to the finish.

I would not get a 4.2 with an automatic, that's pretty much a slug...
Count my vote with Adrianspeeder. I want a manual transmission behind a V8! I don't care if it's faster or slower, I just want to be able to pick what gear I'm in, and when it's time to change. I've done it for 40 some years, and I do it every day in a big rig. I hate not having the control!
My biggest beef with manual trannies is the extra maintenence involved. The clutch is just like your brakes, at some point it wears out and it needs replacing. That's an extra bill I don't need in a vehicle. With my automatic I just drive. At some point the auto will need service too, as the clutch packs and bands wear. By then I've put 150,000+ on the vehicle and it's time for a new one anyway. In that same distance with a manual you would have replaced the clutch disc at least twice (depending how it's driven, it could be more). This at a cost of anywhere between $500-$2000+ depending on the vehicle.
You guys can have your stick, I'm keeping my automatic.

me too. In a sporty car for sure. But in the truck I'm too lazy to shift.
Heck, I steer with my knees now! (drinking a coffee, smoking, playing with the radio, talking on the phone, reading the paper)
if you can't drink a coke, eat a chease burger, talk on a cell phone all at the same time, you can not drive drive a 5sps.....I have never ****ed a clutch in my life, and all the 5sp I owned were bought used......one advantage to an automatic is towing, esp. when backing up...

But please understand, just like you want an auto, I want a stick. Sad that ford doesn't give that option anymore.

Most shifters in trucks have über-long throws (which I hate). If it was to be manual, it would need to be a short shift (which isn't feasible in trucks most of the time).
If I wanted a sportscar, I would have bought a Mustang or a Jaguar...
I want a truck, so I am happy with my auto.
