Get used to it.

OPEC will increase output 2% next week. Big deal. Not much price relief. The new Alaskan oil fields will not be producing for years and it, too, will produce about 2% of America's needs. The big problem is China. The Chinese people are moving up from bicycles and Mopeds to cars. Plus manufacturing is up greatly. While we buy that Chinese crap at Wally World and other places to save a nickle, we are causing our gas prices to increase. It takes a lot of oil to produce the energy needed to manufacture pretty much everything.

Even though it is hitting the fan, it will be difficult to get me out of my SCrew or my wife's SCab for that matter. Yeh, Mamma drives an F-150, too.

I guess it all depends on how you look at it. I bought the truck because I love it and I love driving it. I knew that it was going to be expensive to own this truck based on my driving habits. I drive 160miles a day round trip to work, so it costs me ~$400/month in gas. If you look at the fact that I am paying $650/month for the truck, the fuel bill is pretty high.

If it were just gas going up, most of us could deal with it by cutting corners somplace else. But, unfortunately, these rip-off prices will soon begin to ripple thru our economy and make EVERYTHING more expensive. Then, we're screwed. Just like in the 70s.

The bad thing is that, unlike the 70s, many, many more of us have long, long commutes, that are going to become very difficult to deal with when gas hits $2.50/gal, like I'm sure it will. Once that happens, you will see lots crammed with used SUVs that no one wants because they get such bad mileage. And of course, all the US automakers will be caught with their pants down because they have no really viable small cars that will earn them a profit, nor do they have the production capabilities to produce what the public will demand. The foreign car manufacturers will make out like bandits because they make a good product already. And of course, ol' Bushman don't give a rip about us little people, so we're all F$%cked!

Big SCrew,
How do you cut your driving in half? Stop half way to work and tell them that's as far as I'm willing to travel? Oh, you mean stop going to the cottage up north, 270 miles round trip for me. I'm not going to stop living my life so I can save $40 a month on gas. I travel where I need to and don't go driving just because I have nothing else to do.

Ok, let me clarify. I didnt buy the truck to be economical. I didnt by a truck I couldnt afford to keep fueled. However, that doesnt mean I cant state my opinion regarding fuel costs. See I think current trends in prices wont just affect us big truck V8 folks. Eventually it will hurt the little guy as well. To me its going to get to the point where unless you drive a hybrid or a 4 cylinder and carpool your out of luck.

A little extreme? Maybe. But I am about to have to purchase another vehicle (86 f150 is dying AND she gets HORRIBLE milage...) And quite frankly something efficient like a nice honda doesnt come cheap. New or used. So Im watching this very closely and weighing my options carefully. Sucks but as long as the maket allows it it will continue. Wait and see is the name of the game I guess. So much for me getting another big truck

Later,

Luis S

Love Lost

I have to say I am one of the guilty ones that lost some of the love for my car .. I probably guess that the main reason is because I sold my boat last year and now I have nothing to tow ... so I kind of feel is a waist to have such a big truck just to go work and come back (20 miles round trip) .. also not to help, my foot itch from having a sports car ... and cannot afford to have both so, needless to say, my truck is advertised for sale for what I owe .. 25.5k .. we'll see if someone bites ....

Enjoy your Honda and the 50 bucks a year you will save.

I can see your point in not needing a truck anymore, but I am shure you will miss it.

downgraded

Last year I downgraded from my 2001 v-10 4x4 four door to my current f150 scab 4x4. not because of gas but because my uncle and I sold our business ( logging) and ( mule sales ) if I could go back I would keep my v-10 monster. gas will only go so high before it peaks. If I can afford to own a new f150 I can afford the gas. I give my dad hell for driving his nissan 4x4 and he worked for ford in Mich. I told him that he's just supporting a couple of workers here in Nashville Tn. that built it the rest of the money goes to Japan. I'm trying to talk him into a new ranger next year he has 265000 on his nissan so he needs a new truck.

I did the opposite from most people. Instead of buying a Honda or Toyota car to save gas, I spent less money and bought a used loaded Lincoln Town Car. It is not nearly as hard on gas as people think. It beats the 17/24 published rating. If I drive 12,000 per year and gas cost $2.00- 2.25 per gallon, I can drive the Town Car for less than $10.00 per week additional. It's well worth the difference but my F150 XLT is still a lot more enjoyable to drive.

Are you all kidding me? Try taking the bus once or twice a week. get a buddy to switch weeks of carpooling. Cutting back on driving does not mean you need to completley change your life or cut out the things that mean the most. But this "If I couldnt afford it attitude" is exactly what helps justify and keep oil prices high. Its the fact that we "Dont care"
Oh woe is you that you cant drive your truck everyday. i hate it too but still......we gotta do something. CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN!!!!!! Keep calling. Maybe they will listen. Until then, my Focus and F-150 will share time on the road. Remember, its not just the Chinese, we use 20+million barrels a day.
