Ah-ha! I think you are correct! I am crazy. From reading an hours worth of threads on "exhaust" it sounds to me that I am looking for a 3" SI/DO 2.5 out muffler. Right??!! That makes it a lot easier!

They have different models. center in center out, center in, offset out and all the various types of configurtions.
The factory pipes are 2.75" but I got the 2.5 in 3.0 out and the inlet was just opened up with the pipe fitter. I had them place a 6 inch pipe on the outpuet and dump straight down for best sound. Aiming it to the ground gives off a deeper, bassier tone.

My buddy did that on his Dodge and it sounds pretty sick. They come about 3 or 4 inches off the muffs and then point straight down.

Wonder if that is Smog legal here in Cali.

They must be different when you buy it in a kit. When I did my exhaust in my car, they were black and a little bigger than the 40's mufflers...

not that I know anybody's ages here , but I'd guess that those who like the flowmaster sound are probably young or young at heart, play loud music and like to squeal the tires....

those who hate it probably are a little older and don't like the sound because it interfers with the AM talk radio they are listening to, and distracts them when they are trying to calculate their fuel economy.

Hoo-Ra !

Just in front of the rear tires is a bad exit point? You are worried about fumes in the cab and dirty tires? I guess all those Lightning boys are in trouble then eh?

In reguards to the noise levels and age, I am 30, turning 31 in a few months. I was always in the past wanting a tough loud tone out of an exhaust. And my other truck, the dodge does this well. But once I purchased the F-150, I really started to love the interior luxuries and quietness. I was afraid that the flowmaster might end up being too loud but I was ready to put a glasspack inline with the muffler to deaden it if it were too loud. To my surprise, the muffler sounds GREAT outside and can barely be heard inside. Even driving without the radio on, its barely noticable....but outside it has a great tone and is still getting better sounding as time goes on as it only has been 1.5 weeks since installation.
As for dumping in front of the axle, it isnt bothersome. The exhaust still exits under the truck when moving and at idle im sure it fumes but I never idle in one place for a long time anyways. With 4 catz im sure its fine
