You'll care....LOL It's not the pad that rusts, it's your BED! If you have it, it'll be on the inside of your bed, passenger side, in front of the tail light. It's pretty big and you can't miss it. All I had to do was lean down and look up and I saw mine there.

When I say inside, I mean on the inside of the outer bed...just behind where the 4x4 sticker would be...up in the wheel well.

NVH pads

The NVH pads inquestion here are installed on the back side of the Box Bodyside Outer panel, not the Fender. Fenders are mounted on the front of the truck.
These pads were installed on the 6.5' and 8.0' Styleside boxes (99 model). They were not installed on the 5.5' Styleside (84 model), or the 6.5' Flairside (83 model). You may find more than one on some 8.0' boxes. Currently thes patches have been deleted.
You do want to have them removed.

Mine is in the shop right now for this. I took a "before" picture, and I plan to take an "after" picture as well. Should be able to post them tonight or tomorrow morning if anyone wants to see them.

EUREKA!!!!

Somebody finally states what the hell the pad is for!

NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness)

Th purpose of this pad has been driving me nuts, although my buddy said Dodge uses them in numerous places to curb harmonic vibration. I figured something similar in the F150's case.

Now the $20K question is: if the pad is useless and not being replaced, why was it there in the first place?

Thanks Elsinore.

First there are rear fenders, 2nd if it was for noise, vibration and harshness why was it only put on the passanger side? I still think it had somthing to do with the tail pipe heat.

Blitzkrieg, it's a long story why the pads were there.
SPC I should have been more clear about Fenders.
Our part nameing/numbering convensions only allow the front closure panel to be called a Fender. You may find other manufactures that have Fenders in the rear of the vehicle, but not a Ford product build in the last 20 years.
As for the pads being used for NVH or exhaust as you insist.
I spoke with the Design and Release Engineer personally.
We have worked together on this program for five years, I really don't think my coworkers are lying.

If Ford woulda coughed up with some inner fenderwells they wouldnt have to worry about the water, mud, salt, and whatever else getting sprayed up there to rust out behind that NVH pad and the rest of the area in question.

Box Outer are a "wet" environment. No manufacture has a "dry" box outer.

I was explaining where the butyl pad was to fellow members, not ford engineers. I think they found the location with my explanation. Who said your coworkers were lying? My only question is why the pad was put on the passenger side rear FENDER & not the driver side. Please explain?

SPC my apologies, I must have missunderstood.
What I meant was, I spoke with the Engineer that released the pad, and has since deleted the pad.
The type of pad in question is not used for thermal management.
It's used to control NVH, harmonic frequencies.

If I have not received a notice from Ford, should I be concerned about this?
Forgive my ignorance, but could you explain the problem a little better?
I understand the pad is in there, where it is, and it's intended purpose, but why does it need to be removed? I'm assuming its causing corrosion from trapping water against the surface?
