Has Anyone Noticed???

How much more fuel you can put in your tank after the nozzel ckicks off the first time. The Lariat has the 27 gal tank. I put 4 gals in it the other day after the nozzel clicked off. I drove it around town for 95 miles before the needle dropped off the full mark on the gauge..

hmmm, I can hardly get in 50 extra cents after mine clicks off.

You need to be careful about overfilling. YOu can saturate the charcoal cannister and you will have to replace it.

I bet mine is saturated then I always squeeze another 10 bucks in after it kicks off.

It depends on the vehicle. You may get the check engine light to come on, it may starve for fuel because the tank can't ventilate and I don't know what else. Nothing good happens. It woiuld not be a warranty issue because the book warns against it.

Would seem to me it would depend on where the canister is mounted. It's got to be above tank level and the vent on the tank should be at it's highest point.

The problem is if you can push fuel into it sitting still at gas station I would think it would easy for fuel to get up into it if you were bouncing around off road with even a moderately full tank.

First couple of times I tried I couldn't get more than a couple of cents worth in, so I have stopped the practice (like the book says!). When I fill I just put it on the lowest locked position to minimize sloshing around during fill-seems to maximize my fill.

That, and that is the way I fill the diesel-with that foamy fuel and all...

When you're filling up, the fuel coming out is being pushed out with air... kinda like when you fill up your soda at a fast food place....or a beer from the tap.

Notice what happens to that soda? It gets fizzy and gets a head on it. The gas is the same way... if you wait a couple minutes for the foam to settle off, you can get more gas in the tank without the sensor getting triggered to stop the flow.

When I fill up, and the pump shuts off, I wait about 10-20 seconds for the foam to die down. It will take another 2-3 gallons at full pump speed and then I play the top off game. I've never heard of the charcoal canister and I've fill every vehicle I've owned this way with zero problems. I must just be lucky. I'm just taking a guess here but I'm thinking that the charcoal canister must have something to do with filtering vent fumes from the tank. So you don't smell gas when the fuel gets sloshed around. Just a guess though.

I have not been able to squeeze much more then half a gallon in after the pump trips.... I used to be able to add 3 gallons or so in my explorer... but seems when my tank is filled its filled on my new truck.....

The charcoal cannister is on the end of the vent hose that allows air into the tank to replace theh fuel as it is used. It is to keep the fumes from escaping into the air. Sometimes, when overfilling the tank, the gas goes through the vent hose and saturates the cannister and effectively it won't allow air into the tank and the vehicle can stop or it can allow the vacuum to collapse the tank. The cannister is usually located just behind the radiator support (on most vehicles). It till have 2 or 3 hoses coming out of the top and may be round rectangular.

I've never tried to overfill. I let the pump stop and then fill to the next dollar. Never had a problem or any spillage.
