Reverse in 4X4

Hi Guys,

I am just wondering why my 04 can not go backwards (in reverse) when I am in 4x4 high? My 2001 was the same way.

Why is it designed like this?

You certainly should be able to go in reverse - how else you going to get out of tight spots and being stuck.

Something is wrong if you cant get into reverse.

Are you trying to turn at the same time? Are you on a hard, dry surface? 4x4 should not be used on hard, dry surfaces.

I backed out of 3 1/2 feet of snow in 4 Low last weekend. I backed down a super steep hill at our hunting camp in 4 low.

There is something wrong with your truck. No joke. Take it in and have it looked at!! Your 4X4 system could be buggered. That would suck.

im with silvr and guessing the pavement was dry n he had the wheels turned, especially if his 01 was the same. Two trucks not going backwards is probably user error.

NO NOT A CHEVY - If i did have a chevy, I would not be asking on this site but rather a chevy one.

I have an 04 F-150 SCREW and no, It was not on dry pavement. I know a little more than not do do that. We currently have snow. I put it in revesre to back out of my driveway and it starts to move backwards but then it all tightens up and I stop.

I guess its off to the FIx it up place I go

Whats the chances of one person having 2 trucks that done this?

Does it spin the rear wheels, or just lock up...Floor it and see what gives.

I had a former f150 that did a similiar thing, would not reverse in 4x4 and VERY stiff in 2wd but seemed to go in forward ok. The dealership found it was a frozen Emergency Brake cable, replaced it and was advised to not use the ebrake if I don't have to in freezing weather. just my .02 .

Thanks Mike99a.

I will mention it to the dealer when I take it in.

did you have 4x4 engaged before you tried backing up? When you flip the switch for 4x4, you need some forward motion for it to lock in properly. If you're parked in your driveway in 2wd, flick the switch, and back up without going forward first, you will have engagement issues. One of the reasons I like cheap manual engagements...
