Re: Great Truck, Could Be Better

I am a former/current (never got rid of my old truck, I intend to turn it into a show truck) Chevy owner who put 186000 miles on a 91 1500 2WD Reg Cab 8' bed. The Chevy is a simple design. I think it's very well thought out and executed.

Eeeeewww you compare a '91 1500 8' bed to an 05' F150?? Golly those interiors are hideous IMO. (Not to disrespect your truck) Plus if it is cold outside your passenger freezes to death on the RH side. And that seat....OMG that seat. Like riding on a 2 X 6. OH and the carburater, I mean throttle body injection. Now that was a good idea!! I had a '95 F150 5.0 with slight mods and used to toast those old 350's all day! No offense to your truck of course.

A lot of this stuff is just personal preference. All Ford starters are on the column and all automatics have OD buttons. I've owned Ford/Merc products from 78, 88, 94, 95, 2002, 2003 and now 2004. If you've always driven Fords, then the Chebby way would be a PITA. As for the five-speed, I would love to have the 4R70W in my wife's Mountaineer. The five-speed they put in that thing has just too many shift-points. Seems like the darn thing is always shifting up - down, etc. IMHO, these 4.6 and 5.4L V-8's run better on four gears.

As for the plastic mirrors - have you seen those bow-tie Z-71's with what looks to be 60% body plastic - UGLY.

I'm on the virge of purchasing one myself and have looked/test drove several times. One thing I wish they offered was a leather upgrade in the XLT. Just the seats and steering wheel would suffice. if you want leather you have to upgrade to the lariat.

It could be just a seating option. I like leather but don't need the chrome bling bling interior of the Lariat. Don't get me wrong, it is nice but i like the XLT interior with leather seats.

why no downsliding rear window?

imagine if the window is down. You hit the brakes. Something in your bed with a good bit of weight slides up and slams into the front of the bed. With the sound of a thud and shattering glass, bye bye back window.

Why do they do it on sporttracs? The vehicles and their owners are much less likely to carry anything heavy enough to bend the front bed bulkhead, also much less length for it to slide and build momentum.

That's at least my opinion, and why I would never want such a window in a real truck.

Ummm, the bed is not part of the cabin (where the glass would be), so you can beat the hell out of the bed and not affect the glass.

The only things I would want are the lowering rear window and 5 speed auto.

LMAO...back in HS I was riding with a buddy of mine that had an unsecured 5.0 long block in the back of his Nissan PU. Someone pulled out in front of us and he slammed on breaks hard.....then BAMMMM glass was all over us! So you can bust the back glass if you try hard enough! LMAO

Your buddy with the Nissan was obviously a physics major? Why do people set unsecured items against the tailgate instead of sliding them to the front of the bed? I see this on a daily basis. Of course all of this has nothing to do with the original thread, but I enjoy derailing threads.

I keep looking overhead expecting to see the outside temp/direction display like the previous gen trucks. I'd like to see it back up there rather than where it is. Just makes it easier to see at a glance.
Other than that, I'd leave it the way it is. Well except for a lower price, more power, & better mileage. But I think everyone would agree on those.

I too wish a 5speed manual was available for the 5.4, or a 5 speed auto atleast. Also wish they would put this pig on a diet. Just lose 300-400lbs and these trucks will stop, acellerate, and handle so much better

I would like to have the rear power window to go down insteaad of sideways. As well it should be about twice the size as it is now. That way with the ventvisor on the back, you can leave your rear window open abit on hot days.

I completely hate where they instaled the information center on our truck. It is allmost impossible to see while you are driving. It should be installed in a much more visible location, preferably on or near the rearview mirror.

I also wish they wouldnt use cheesy graphics for our 4X4 logo's as that was the very first (& cheapest) mod i did to my truck, removing it.

Beside those few flaws, i really do like my truck, and it definately the nicest truck availble on the market todate.

Just my 2 cents.

2. Very simple... 4 forwards gears = 4 selections on the shifter. Get rid of the OD button and put 4-3-2-1 or D-3-2-1 like it should be.

3. 5 speed automatic. If Nissan, Toyota, & Dodge can do this, why can't the second largest auto maker in the world offer a 5 speed auto? Even the Ranger has a 5 speed auto and the Ford 500 has a 6 speed auto.

4. Make the extended cab doors open past 90 deg. If Nissan can do this right out of the box on its first real truck, Ford should be able to do this after decades of making trucks.

9. Make the seat backs in the ext cabs fold forward to offer a flat place to put large items that you don't want screwing up your seats. The floor has the jack, drive shaft tunnel and subwoofer in the way.

It never ceases to amaze me how someone can buy one of these trucks and then pick it to pieces once they get it home. I'm just going to comment on a few of the listed things. #2 OD is needed on a vehicle this size if your going to get ANY kind of mileage out of it. Having the gears broken down on the column/console would make sure they never get used. I can't remember the last time I shifted manually into first or second.

#3 OD is your fifth speed. By overdriving the tranny in each gear you actually end up with an 8 speed gear box. The 500 has an CVT gearbox that would not work in a truck.

#4 If this was a selling point then everybody would be doing it. I've seen a few Titan's with paint damage because of those over extending rear doors.

#9 I bet that Ford thought you might use the bed of the truck for those large items.

I'm not trying to be rude here, It just bothers me when people do stuff like this.

You can always get the FX4 with leather interior, IMHO the FX4 inteior looks better to me than the XLT or the Lariat.

I think that there is nothing wrong with most of the suggestions that started this, (even a great truck like ours isn't perfect) especially the 5 speed auto. I would like a mist feature on te wipers so when the slowest setting is too fast I don't want to turn them on, just one click and it wipes them and springs back to off. A bit more interior storage, like in the center part of the 40/20/40 split bench seat would be just what the doctor ordered as well. Maybe I'm crazy but I would also appreciate being able to see the total odometer milage and the trip odometer milage at the same time.

Don't want the extra cost of the 4x4 though.... i wonder if the dealer could swap the seats out if i asked them. Does anyone know a dealer that would do this? I would be willing to pay them obviously.

Just get aftermarket leather. It's cheaper, you get more leather, and you have more color choices.
