If you gap insurance, you'll be good to go. I think, very generally speaking, that if the cost of repairs is either 40% or 60% of the vehicle's value, it's totalled. I really liked my '03 Focus, but it was hit three times; the car was repaired so it looked great after every time, but I just didn't feel comfortable in it anymore. I bit the bullet and went upside in buying my truck, but vehicle wise, I think I came out better. The Focus was a really good car, lots of fun to drive, good gas mileage, did everything I asked it to. It just didn't feel right anymore.

That thing needs to be totaled. I hit a guy in a new Sububan going 50 mph and it bent the front frame. My insurance totaled it because frames are hard to fix. I got $34K for it. It will never drive the same....push for them to total it.

I agree with jake01. If it's so badly damaged that it's gonna take $14K to fix, chances are, it'll never be the same again.

$14,000 guestimate and they're gonna fix it? Who runs this body shop, Earl Schibe or something? Good grief.

As others have stated, they should total it if the frame is bent. I don't believe it can be repaired properly.

If they don't total it and repair it. DO NOT EXCEPT IT FROM THE BODY SHOP UNLESS IT IS 100%! Make them go over the repairs that are needed now. Take photos of the damaged areas. When they contact you to pick it up. Make the body shop manager and repair tech. go over every area. Tell them its not personal. You are just protecting your investment. (A$$) Make sure to check things like AC. Sometimes they dont recharge systems untill its hot enough outside.

This happened to me 3 years ago with our Windstar. I did not except the van for 4 months because it was not completly repaired. The other guys insurance picked up the rental bill for the entire time. Remember your insurance company works for you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Ask for a DV claim

Bought the wife a new '04 Tahoe last month. On her second morning of taking the kids to school, a gal ran a red light doing 50 plus in a crown vic and hit the wife. She had put a total of 34 miles on the Tahoe. Thanks God everyone was ok. I can always replace the Tahoe. Don't know if I could ever find another woman to put up with me thou. The insurance wouldn't total it even with $14k plus damage. It bent the frame so I wouldn't take it back without a new frame. The next week I traded it in as is and got another new one.

Anahiem: Tell the insurance you want a DV (Diminished Value) claim on the truck too. You have to asked for it or they wouldn't even tell you about it. They have to have a 3rd party estimate what the difference is between the value of the damaged truck vs an undamaged truck. Then they have to pay you the difference. Even if the truck is repaired just like new, it would have the same value as an undamaged truck.

It's usually not much but every bit helps. On my $44K Tahoe, I got a big $2200 on the DV claim. Didn't cover my expense on the old Tahoe, but it helped.
