Rear End Thump-Clunk

Wondering if anyone has experienced a Low Speed(<20mph) thump or clunk from the rearend. I have seen alot of posts for the vibration but I don't seem to have the vibration. What I have is an intermittant(happens 1or2 every 60-80miles) clunk or thump from what feels like the trans or diff. it happens when I ease back into the throttle going straight or if I accelarate normally around a corner from a stop. I cannot reproduce it. Sometimes the throttle lags after the thump but it almost feels like I have been bumped or rearended when it happens. Also the diff. appears wet, like fluid is leaking from somewhere possibly the diff heats up and is causing this? Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if there is a fix for it or TSB? I will be taking it in and hope it will do it for the techs at the dealer.

My Truck is 2004 FX4 18"Bfg's 3.73 LS Build Date 11-09-03

Thanks Jim

TSB on this.

The slip-yoke needs to be re-greased.

Huge improvement in performance after they do it. My truck before the repair vs after seems almost like the parking brake was set to the first "click" and after the repair it was released.

Plus that annoying "thunk" is gone.

no I don't, but you can suggest the service guy look at the slip-yoke TSB. Its easy enough for them to look up.

I can't seem to find any info about this particular TSB. I've got the wavy look and a slight door rattle on my driver's side. Anymore info about this anyone?

I've noticed a clunk on my truck too. It seems to happen after I've backed out of my driveway, shift to D and then accelerate forward. I'm thinking about taking it in. Haven't paid attention enought to notice it on a turn though.

I also have the Wavy Drivers Side Rear Door I thought I was crazy when I noticed this after owning the truck for a year. I had the Drivers side slight click noise when going down dirt/bumpy roads it seems to have gone away on its own. I thought this noise was maybe coming from the door handle as it was the only thing I could think of to move around on the outside to repeat the noise. I have near 30k on my truck and it is amazing what little things seem to get noticed when the truck is so good otherwise. I wonder how many things I would notice with my 98 F150 after driving this truck for over a year. I would like to find out why the door is wavy and how it is fixed?

I have no vibration on my '05 XLT 4x4, but I have noticed the "clunk". The most common scenerio is exactly the same as:

Guess I should take mine in for a greasing too.

do so... I let mine go on for 2 months because I found it more annoying than anything... wow what a difference in performance. Im sorry I didnt do it sooner.

Now I just had mine done last week so I haven't compared fuel economy. My guess is that it will be a little lower now (if I had slippage before I obviously wasn't getting all of my engine power to the wheels, thereby requiring more fuel)

I'm waiting to hear if "the fix" worked for you guys.

Also, does anyone have the tsb # for that??? My dealer was having trouble finding it. I'm going to have my bed Line X'ed today, and I was hoping to kill two birds...'cause I pass right by the dealer on my way.

he's having trouble finding it?

It's there in the system. Tell him its the "grease the slip yoke" TSB. And if he still can't find it, maybe you don't want him working on your truck. After all, if he cant find a TSB, how many issues will you have they they wont fix right because they havent read the TSB? Or they are just too lazy to look for the root of a problem (vs the symptom)

My dealer had no problem looking up the TSB's
The one for the WAVY Door Panel is for trucks built before 11-13-03. It appears the TSB says that in cold weather the inner door structure is too stiff for the outer panel and WAVINESS occurs on the door.(similar to vinyl siding be installed too tight)....makes since because it has been pretty cold at night the last week and this is when I started to noticed this. The fix is something like this.....remove the inner door bracing....apply a mastek to the inside of the outer panel and then apply heat. I assume this pulls the waves out of the panel. Anyway not sure if I will have them fix it or not since it is only noticable at certain angles. The service advisor noticed it though and looked up the TSB for it. Wondering if anyone has had this fixed and what the results where?
I have an appointment for the clunk and the dealer was very aware of the problems, symptoms, and solutions. I am just wondering if the Lubing of the Slip Yoke is a band-aid for a deeper problem with the driveline or if they just weren't lubing them in production? Will the clunking reappear after 10k,20k,30k etc...or worse yet will a vibration(which I don't have) start because the slip yoke is free to move w/ the Lube??

On the wavy rear doors, is it only a visible wave, or something that can be felt like ripples in the sheet metal? I see waves, but there are more than 2 of them, which is how many most others are saying is present on the TSB.

Still wondering if I have this issue or not.
