Hot Oil Undercoating
Hot Oil Undercoating
The two thoughts on oil undercoating I've heard is that it does help with rust prevention and those that say it doesn't help at all.
Here in Vermont, where we have 8 months of winter and 4 months of damn poor sledding, the highway departments really put the salt to the roads. I plan of keeping my truck at least 5 years and don't want to worry about it being rotted away.
With my previous 99 F150, I noticed that the seam at the bottom of the door on the inside was developing rust. I knew this was a problem from my 91 F150 so was careful and kept this area clean, and it still happened. My other two trucks were not oil undercoated.
Just wondering what people's thoughts on hot oil undercoating are. I know it can be messy for a few days after application and also smell a bit until the oil burns off.

I was all excited when I read the title, then bummed when it was just another truck undercoating thread...
Save your money, skip the undercoating. Get the old lady to rub you up with hot oil instead.

My family has never owned an undercoated vehicle and we live in western NY and have the same type of weather and lots of salt. I've never seen any of our vehicles get eaten away from underneath, even the 88 Colt (as of 2000), everything else fell apart on it, but it never rusted out. I personally feel that undercoating is just a scam.
oil treatment
My buddy is a body man and swears by the oil treatment, he told me of restoring a 20 yr old car for a customer and when he was cutting out a rear panel discovered that it was rust free in one section,, the rest was all rusted away,, trying to figure out why this one part he did some digging in the trunk and found a quart of oil that had fallen into a crevice and over the years rupured and coated the area that was was rust free with oil,, he was so impressed that he does all his new cars with the rust treatment with oil,, especially the door seams,, charges $125 for customers to do the oil treatment ,,so probably isn't a bad idea.. john

another thought on rust protection
Just thought of another thing about undercoating,, i had my 93 f150 undercoated by the dealer and was given a 10 year guarantee against rust,, cost about $300 to have it done,,my last 2 yrs with the vehicle i did develope some rust around the rocker panels and the door seams,, sent a picture of the rust along with the claim form to the company and the estimate from my body man to do the work,, they promply sent me a check for $700 for the repairs !! no hassel what so ever,, the last year i developed another spot of rust around the wheel well and sent a estimate for $300 for the repairs,, this time they sent a rep out to look at the truck,,no problem,, he made a appt at my house,, said he just wanted to look at the truck undercoating and see what the dealer missed in the undercoating as this shouldn't of happened,, said the undercoating was not properly applied,,left me a check for $300 and went off to talk to the dealer,, so my $300 investment neted me $1000 in repairs,, sure helped when i traded in my 93 for the 2004,,got top dollar,, also if this one goes in for any body work whatever,, i will have the oil treatment done then also,, john Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Oh geesh... scrolling through this thread early on made me worry what I would see by the end... thankfully, fatman stepped in and put it back on track.

Hey! I gave him legit advise:
Is was his fault for the false advertising of the thread...
Anywho... in keeping with the topic of the thread...
How long do you plan on keeping your truck jhogan? If your going to scrap it for a new one in 5-7 years I wouldn't bother with it. It won't rust. If your in it for the 'drive it 'till it drops' long haul, then by all means lube it up (the truck)!!!

I was planning on keeping it for 5 years, that is how many years my bank tells me I owe on it.
I was considering it an option only because of the rust that started developing on my 99 even with decent care during the winter months. The treatment is fairly reasonable at about $80. I also have faith in Ford with what they apply to the metal making it somewhat rust resistant and the fact that they have the rust through warranty
I HATE winter, it's 2:50 pm and it's 25 degrees out with the wind blowing about 20 MPH. I rank it right up there with the NY Yankees, warm beer and Chevrolet.

you know, I gotta open myself up to flaming here, but my last 2 vehicles (chevy s-10 and blazer) had a thick wax undercoating. That stuff DID NOT come off short of scraping it with a screwdriver. Never had any rust, but I only had them for 3 years each at the most. I was a little disappointed that ford didn't do something similar, but at least it's not a chevy....
