people riding in the box

I always hear conflicting stories about this, i guess because the laws are different in other places (duh). I live in manitoba. it is my understanding that if all of you seats have a passenger in them, then it is alright to put people in the box? s this true? i dont wana get pulled over. thanks

I think it depends on the state/province. I have seen people pulled over in Utah for having people in the back.

In California I know that every single person in the truck has to have a seat and a seat belt, put some seats back there, kinda silly to do that though.

I was in GA, near Atlanta a few months ago doing some engineering work... and I almost swerved off the road when I saw a few guys sitting in the bed, going down the freeway... I had to a double take, since I hadn't seen in it since 1986-87 in CA....

For anybody interested, PENNSYLVANIA code is this:

Requirements: I. A person cannot operate either an open-bed pickup truck or open flatbed truck >35 MPH if a person is occupying the bed of such truck. Title 75, '3719(a)
II. A person cannot operate either an open-bed pickup truck or open flatbed truck at any speed if a person <18 years old is occupying the bed of such truck or trailer. Title 75, '3719(b)(1)
III. A child <4 years old, who is being transported in the cargo area of a motor vehicle, must be secured in a child passenger restraint system. Title 75, '4581(a)(1)
Sanctions for a Violation: I. It is a Summary Offense to violate the requirements in either I or II above. The sanction for a Summary Offense is a fine of not more than $25. Title 75, '6502(a)
II. For the sanctions related to a violation of requirement III above, see the sanctions for a violation of the requirements for the use of Child Safety Restraint Systems.
Exemptions: The prohibition contained in requirement II above does not apply to (1) a child of or a child employed by a farmer where the child is being transported either between parts of the farm or for farm work, (2) a child being transported between a hunting camp and a hunting site or (3) a child who is participating in an authorized parade. Title 75, '3719(b)(2)

I live in Atlanta, and I believe the state law against riding in the back of a pickup only applies to children 16 and under.

Concerning seatbelts, pickup trucks have always been exempt from the state seatbelt law. There is a push to add trucks to the law, but this is meeting stiff resistance from the rural farm counties.

It is illegal here for passengers in a pickup box, common sense really ( no seatbelts ). It probably depends on the cops mood and if he feels like pulling you over for that

That's what I have seen in North Carolina. I saw a cop once pull someone over for a person in the back, then on MANY occasions I've seen the cops just drive on by, no matter how many are in the back.

As for here in Tennessee, I haven't experienced this yet. But when summer comes, I'll be putting it to the test I suppose!

The only time I have been pulled over for having people in the bed was when we had 6 people in it the cop said we couldn't have more than 4 and they had to sit directly on the floor not on the wheel wells. other than that Arkansas doesn't seem to have a law against it.

When I lived in KY I reguarly saw Mexican workers pile into the back of trucks to work the farms, The police saw this and would turn the other cheek. In my opinion, I believe a ticket would be issued for any other situation. If this happened here in Massachusetts, you would be locked up and on the evening news.

Let 'em.

It's my understanding that in Manitoba, you can allow people in the box of your truck as long as they are stapped in. Such as using a ratchet strap so they have something to hold on to.
