No offense, but I can't believe that we are even having this discussion.

I agree. It doesn't matter if it is illegal or not. It just isn't a smart thing to do.

Okay - I don't want to sound like a complete idiot here, but one of my FAVORITE childhood memories is being piled under quilts and riding in the back of an old pickup while we went to look for mountain laurel in bloom. It used to be twenty-five or thirty years ago they didn't legislate stuff like that. And, if you weren't a complete moron and DROVE like there may be someone back there who would fall out, and you made sure your passengers had enough SENSE to stay seated and not hang off of the cab, it isn't much more dangerous than being on a motorcycle...

The reason it's illegal and more frightening now is that too many idiots have done stupid things while having passengers in the back of their trucks. At least once or twice a month I see kids hanging off of the ROOF of p.o.s. camaros as their friends are driving 50 or 60 miles an hour...

Unfortunately, the law legislates against our stupidity, even if not all of us ARE complete idiots...

Sorry... I just really wish I could take my kid for ONE ride in the back of a pickup on a summer evening... accompanied by a responsible adult, of course.

I understand what your saying, one of my favorite memories of this past summer(my first summer with my new truck), was driving at night just outside the city with my wife and finding a field where it's nice and dark, getting in the box to just watch the stars.

Camping was alot more fun too, for the same reason. Just lay back and realize this is what life is all about. There are very few things I found to be more relaxing.

there is nothing wrong with riding in the box as long as you and the driver are responsible. And by the way cpfd910, even if it were stupid and wrong, people are going to do it regardless so a discussion of the laws regarding box riding is hardly a stupid/usless discussion.

In Texas there can be passengers in the bed only if they are a certain age or older (18 I think, may be 16). Ive never seen anyone pulled over when kids were in the back, its not really anything frowned upon too much.

Hey Serge, don't get me wrong I like the fact that idiots ride in the beds of pickups. At the fire department we call that job security.

Here in kentucky, it is only illegal for children under 16 to ride in the back of th truck. When I was younger, it was the only way my friends and I could get around was riding in the back, we all drove pickup trucks. never stopped of pulled over for it.
