Bad Pothole - Windshield Whistles

I was driving late last night and hit a pothole with the right front and now I have wind noise from the windshield. The truck was perfectly quite and after the pothole I have really bad wind noise above 45-50 mph.

If you put your ear close to the rearview mirror, it seems as if the noise is coming from the top center of the windshield. I have never had this happen and didn't know if anyone else had experienced this.

Pretty weird.

yeah....mine does the exact same thing. I'm not sure when or how it started but there is a lot of wind noise coming from the top of my windshield right by the rearview mirrior and naturally the higher the speed the louder the wind noise.

shouldnt need to if the window isnt cracked. It is probably as simple as pulling the window, stripping the old seal/gasket and putting on a new gasket. Im not sure but I think its some kind of silicone.

The windshield did not crack whatsoever, and I will keep an eye out for water when it rains or I wash it. I will let you know what happens when I take it to the dealer soon.

It's a urethane sealer they use on these modern windshields. The windshield is a structural member now because of the airbags. When the passenger bag inflates, the windshield is the only thing holding it in place.

The old butyl sealer they used in the old days just wouldn't be strong enough to take the pressure.

All the dealer will do is pull out the glass and reseal it. Providing, of course the glass isn't damaged.

Give this a try....you might be able to pin point the leak.

Close all windows, turn on your heater fan to high (do not use recirculate mode) cover the edges of the window with soapy water. If there is a leak, the air pressure inside the cab should be leaking out and you'll see bubbles where it is escaping.

A few years ago, I had a new windshield installed in a Ranger. It was a cold day, and there was no room to leave it inside after the guy put the glass in. The goofball parked the Ranger outside, closed all of the windows and cranked the heater fan up to high.

About 10 minutes later, I walked over to the Ranger to see how the new windshield looked. The air pressure inside had pushed the top of the windshield away from the frame about 1/4 of an inch near the top. There was no question that I had a major air/water leak now.

Thanks Neil.

Thanks for the great input and I will try the soapy water tomorrow.

I couldn't believe the Supercrew accident in your gallery. I hope no one was seriously injured.

Thanks again and I will let everyone know how it turns out.

I'm also getting the wind noise at the top of the the windshield. I don't know when it started either, but it has not always been like that.

I have not had this many problems with any other vehicle I've owned. I drove a 1990 mustang GT for 13 yrs......excellent car no problems

Just the luck of the draw I guess.

Be sure it's coming from the windshield. I had a whistle above 50 mph and it turned out to be the fog lights. Yes, I said fog lights. There's a TSB on this. I had to put some round foam sealer around the edges of the fog lights to get rid of the whistle. The wind whips through the bumper around the fog lights and creates a high pitch whistle. On mine anyway...that's what it was.

Did you ever get this resolved? Mine has also developed wind noise around the top of the front windshield, I noticed it the first time it turned cold about 6 weeks ago and it's getting worse. I'm taking it by the dealership tomorrow..
