Let's talk throttle...No not lag
I just do not trust elecitral componets to control the main functions of my vehicle.
This is coming from a student of instrumention/electronics/electrical engineering..... Pretty bad when im knocking my own job security:o

"I just do not trust elecitral componets to control the main functions of my vehicle."
Interesting statement there....So what does the PCM in your truck and every other modern automobile do??? And why would you trust the Diablo tuner to adjust so many 'functions' of your vehicle if you didn't already have to trust electrical components to control the main functions of your vehicle????
Not trying to flame anybody here, but you can't make valid complaints when your actions are contradictory to them...

brakes/steering/throttle... Main functions... I still want mechanical linkage for those. If anything electrical shuts down(minus throttle) atleast I can still steer and brake...
Mmmmkay, lets not try and get smart
I'm in favor of simplicity and durable mechanical means of controlling the vitals elements of a vehicle. This was possible with a throttle cable for many, many years and even through this year with the '04 Heritage. I think that if, for instance the government would mandate things like this to not change like they have to electronic controls, that it would still be possible to manufacture the same or better quality vehicles as has always been done. The most depressing and disgusting thing about all of new drive-by or electronic methodology (B.S.) if the simply fact that (1) it's totally unpredictable in reliability for any system of the vehicle that's involved and (2) when (it's going to happen sooner, or later-when out of warranty) any one part of these electronic control systems fail the driver will be stranded ( possibly for days) and then about 90% of the owners won't be able to do anything to fix their vehicle which was possible in the past. The absolutely worst part of this deal is that the cost of the fixes for these failures is going to be totally astronomical. So enjoy the ride, style and shine because one of these days there's a good chance we'll get to ride home in a cab (not our own) and it'll end up really costing out the ***.

electric throttle by wire is first then all electric motors are next !!!!
With no Superchips or Diablos to make em go faster HHHHMMMMM. Ill be looking for Joliet Electric to build a 125 hp motor for mine LOL.

The one thing I don't understand is Ford's claim that the drive by wire system provides better and smoother throttle response.
Sure, before my reflash, the throttle was so smooth and gradual that it was faster to get out and walk.
I just don't understand how this system is supposed to be better than a cable throttle.
Ford will never convince me that the drive by wire provides better response then a cable attached right to the throttle. Push down, it goes, this has worked for 40+ years.
I recently poked my head under the dash and I couldn't believe how many wires were connected to that pedal! Going back to my original post, the amount of engineering needed to replace 1 cable is mind boggling.

That's the exact same argument used for years against electronic ignition and fuel injection. They argued that they could fix or adjust the points or carb. beside the road and get home.

That's providing you were mechanically inclined enough to know how to adjust points or the carb. If not you were still stuck, no different now. A trick I use with my '69 Tbird is to use the striker from a match book to file down the points, she won't run great but it will get you home.
I don't have a problem with all the electronics, simply put today's vehicles are far more reliable then vehicles built even 10-15 years ago. I just question over engineering something like a throttle, when 1 cable did the trick.

Yall can call me a paranoid strange individual, but i fear when we start letting robots "think" on their own. Im sure it wont happen in any of our life times, but I do "fear" the day True A.I. is reached.

haha. When that day comes ill just start walking
How did we get from my original post about the engineering of this drive by wire system, to the topic of artificial intelligence? Something I'm not seeing in some of these posts by the way.
