weight fee
Seems a bit steep. I know all States are different, but here in VT I pay $96 for a two year registration (one year is $52, every little bit helps).
I have an F-150 and I believe the F-250's are the same fee. If you register commercially it will cost you more though.
But don't forget in VT we get winter 7 months out of the year!!

I'm in California too.
The Weight fee on your annual registration is based off the VIN, so I think it is based on the GVWR. Supposed to help cover increased wear on the roads.
You can legally get your truck registered as a non commercial vehicle and not pay the fee. You would have normal passenger car plates. It would save some money, but, if you ever get caught hauling anything you would be in trouble. I mean anything, a cardboard box, a mattress, helping someone move, busted.

older f150s were class 1, now the new f150 costs me 80 some dollars for a class 2 sticker. I darn near soiled my pants. Has pretty much the same weight capacity as a normal 1/2 ton truck, but the truck itself is so heavy on curb weight that it puts it over the class limit. That sucks; that's trucks...

License plates in Jackson, MS for my 04 Screw were going to be $1004. I bought it while trying to get my house inside the city limits closed. I asked what they would be in the county and she said $419. I waited until I closed the house and had to show my closing papers before they would let me have them for $419. This place is a joke when it comes to license plates.

It's a California thing!
Like mmckenna said, you can get it registered as a passenger vehicle. But you must have a permanent mount camper or shell installed. Take either one off and you need commercial plates again.
When I bought my truck last year I only paid $40 for plates and registration. I just got my renewal for Ca. and they want $390
of my money. But I ain't going to give it to them. Changing my plates to Washington State. Sometimes its good to be military.

here's an OLD post to bring up... but does anyone know or understand the rules RE the weight fee? I was reading something on a titan forum that if your truck weighs less than 6000 lbs it shouldn't qualify... I've had my '99 F150 at the scales many times and it's only 4950 with 2 people in it...
Would it be worth it to challenge DMV with a weight certificate? Has anyone tried this, or know of anyone who has? I couldn't even find out what the law was regarding what exactly the weight fee is targeted at...
Afterthought: if you had custom plates, got it registered as a passenger car with camper shell; then removed camper shell... nobody would be the wiser unless you got pulled over.... hrmm....
I guess I'm just frustrated that my 10 year old truck has an $80 weight fee bringing the total registration to $198....

@snwplow
visit your Kalifornia DMV website. they will have a breakdown of the fee's and how they are assigned
it sucks, but you do live in the Dictatorship of Kalifornia. I've seen on several forums with differenct vehicles how they are bumping their $$$ charges on vehicles.
