remote starter plan

anything sound wrong about the following:

1. want to add this ford remote starter to my new '04 xlt and have it installed at same dealer where i bought the truck:

http://www.fordaccessoriesstore.com/...881&detail=yes

2. will ask dealer to warranty remote starter and installation for life of vehicle warranty...

3. remote starter comes with its own fobs, and hope is that original vehicle pats fobs will work as before to unlock/lock vehicle w/o needing modifications...

4. plan to keep remote starter fob in home and use primarily through living room window to warm up vehicle and defrost windows on cold, frosty winter mornings.. (which there are plenty of in upstate south carolina... and vehicle is only about 15 ft. from living room window...) reckon night before will need to turn up heat/defroster controls....

5. remote starter should cost about $180, and expect dealer to be able to install for 1-2 labor hours?

have never had a remote starter, and after reading lots of threads on same subject am a little unsure about people having to stash keys on the truck, etc.?

tia for comments, suggestions, etc.

I just bought my truck last week and talked to them about remote start at the dealerhip. They said the system would be 270.00 but the labor would be 450.00-600.00 labor would be 6-8 hours. So I went aftermarket shoping. I'm having a electronics store put a 2-way viper on for 400.00 out the door and they said 1 to 2 hours.

my needs are limited - just need to warm it up on frosty mornings a couple months a year... and can't afford much. but want to avoid any warranty/system conflict hassles...

Wow... you got robbed.

Aftermarket remote starters should run under $200 installed.

For 400-600 bones that's an entire alarm w/ remote start setup!

In reality, don't we all get robbed at some point?

I know I'm getting robbed with mine, but that's the price I pay for not knowing how to wire anything and being a pansy by not liking the cold weather.

For a 2-way w/ LCD, that isn't bad. Not great, not bad.

I fail to understand why people want two key fobs, even if you think you'll only use it from the house. It's like $25 more (aftermarket systems) to get keyless entry added to your remote starter system. I use my remote starter many place besides home on cold mornings. Hot or cold, an extra couple minutes running before I get to my vehicle can take the edge off the initial sitting.

apt, sorry to be so slow and stupid, but what's a 2-way lcd?

and you're saying that by upgrading to the keyless entry, i would then use a new, single fob for both the remote starter and the powerlocks?

the price difference for the ford remote w/keyless is not all that great, either...

cheers...

The two-way LED remote, let's you know what's going on with your vehicle. It also controls your doors, alarm, remote start, etc. I am getting a two-way installed very soon.

This one is one of the more top-of-the-line ones at the place I'm getting it. But it also is a security system and will alert me via my key fob if someone is screwing with my truck.

There are many different starters out there and they will program everything to your one key fob. This place also asked me if I wanted my factory fob programmed to it instead of theirs, and I said the range sucked so bad on it, that I want the new one.

Plus, it looks so damn cool.

thanks guigster... i probably should have learned all that if i'd read your thread more carefully.... but i'm an extra slow learner...

things are starting to come together in my little pea-sized brain now....

guess my main issue now is the warranty thing... reckon i'll sleep better at night knowing i put in a ford remote installed by my dealer and maybe avoid grief if the thing starts acting wacky...

btw, shouldn't we both be WORKING right now instead of goofing around here?

cheers...

The one they quoted me for 400 is a 2 way system with remote start, entry and alarm it has 1 lcd and one regular fob. Out of all the one's I've looked at it seemed to be the best deal. I would rather have a factory ford system but theres no way I am paying that high labor cost. On the ones with the alarm, can you lock the doors without activating the alarm?

I am working. I'm a supervisor. I'm supervising.

If you get a reputable aftermarket installer, that is an authorized dealer/installer of the system you're buying, you should not have any warranty problems. I trust this guy I'm going to, so I don't anticipate any problems. When I asked my Ford Service Tech about anything I should know before I get an aftermarket starter, all they said was make sure the person installing knows what they're doing with the wiring.

From what I understand on this forum, and from the aftermarket installer, it will not void your warranty. The installer said that if anything did happen and Ford said the starter had anything to do with a problem, I was to bring him the bill and he'd cut me a check on the spot.

I believe you can lock the doors without arming the system. The one I'm getting has to be activated by the key fob.

I have the 2 way on my trucks. In addition to keeping status on these vehicles the units also offer increased range. 1000ft claim works to a real world 800ft+ operating range btw the remote & truck. Expensive when installed but worth it with peace of mind.

Yes, if installed by the dealer, it carries the same warranty as the truck. I know some places after a year or two will charge you parts and labor, best buy being one. Just move up to the BA, or aftermarket. I personally love the Ford system and we have no problems with the system. If installed correctly, they work great.

sandog, i'm leaning heavily toward the ford system with the keyless entry (2W7Z-19G364-BA)... i think i've seen you say on an earlier thread that a qualified technician should be able to install that on an '04 in a hour or two?
