Dash Rattle

I have a 2004 FX4 Supercrew that has developed a rattle that sounds like it is coming from around the steering wheel. It is driving me insane. I have looked under the dash several times and can find nothing. I did a search for this problem and found a couple of threads relating to it but no fixes. If you have fixed this problem or the dealer has fixed it for you I would really appreciate some help. This is not your normal rattle, it is very loud at times. Any help would be appreciated.

I've noticed that myself in my truck. A quick but not temporary remedy, is to give the dash a few whacks. That usually takes care of it. I also noticed that the gap on the drivers side dash, where the two pieces of plastic meet, has gotten bigger / wider. I can see it from the chair not all close up on it.

If you figure it out, please let me know.

I have the same stupid problem... but the rattle is so quite that I just thought I was being picky. I have no solution.

Also, I had this VERY VERY annoying rattle that developed every time I hit even the slightest bump in the road. It started out only happening every once in a while and over the course of a few months.... it was driving me crazy. I finally took it to Ford. They had it for 6 hours and the problem was completely gone. I am so relieved. Turns out it was the ceiling panel vibrating against the roof of the truck. They said they just put some sound dampening insulation in a few spots to fix it. It was covered under warranty. I'm tickled pink!

I too have a rattle, or almost a clicking type noise coming from the dash somewhere. It sounds like somewhere around the steering wheel or instrument panel. I keep trying to isloate it so I can bring it in, but I just can't seem to pin it down. If I figure out what it is I'll post it here.

As a side note, my 2002 Sport Trac with 30k on the clock didn't have any rattles when I traded it in.

I havent had mine to the dealer to let them have a shot at it. It's been a busy summer. Now that things have slowed down I am going to take it in. If I find out what it is I will post it.

I've had an intermittent tapping sound coming from the top center dashboard area. Sounds like a wire tapping against it. Comes and goes.

This comes and goes on my truck. Every time it comes back I pound on the dash in a few places and it goes away for another month or two

I took the truck in this morning to get this fixed. If they find out what it is, I'll let you all know.

Thumbs down Me Too

I too have the same thing from the steering wheel / dash area. It's sort of a clicking sound. I actually had it at the dealer two days ago for that and a blown driver's side headlight. They were not able to duplicate the noise or locate the source. I'll just wait until it gets worse or just keep hitting the dash!

Beautiful! Ford keeps up with its hideous rattles from previous generations. My 03 has been quiet, but still has shuffles/creaks. My 99 and 01 were the loudest, with the 01 being absolutely annoying.

Having had new cars and hearing the infamous "cannot duplicate," I took my service advisor for a 10 minute ride to make sure he knew exactly what I was talking about. He even wrote in the service report that he was able to duplicate the concern.

Prior to my F-150 I had a 2002 Sport Trac that was rattle free for 30k miles. So I know not all Ford's rattle.

I sometimes get a rattle around the top of the dash, but I almost always get a click, clunk on sudden takeoff, somtimes a different pitch on sudden slowdown. It actually sounds like a sparkplug socket rolling around on top of the climate control, making a click back against the dash on launch, and a thudding click on stopping. The thing is, it's not all the time. You could simulate this sound by leaving a socket in the glove box. There is nothing visably loose anywhere.
Is this like your noises?
Chris

I have picked up a rattle too at the front of the dash about where the passenger side wiper is, about at the point where the plastic changes. It is intermittant, but rattles at a stop, or while driving (at any speed). The truch has just over 3k on it. I was going to have them look at it when I take it in for an oil change. Hopefully then they can duplicate it. Is this like the rattle everyone else is getting?

That Rattle is a easy fix.. its a wire harrness that sits on top of the heating/air tubes <not sure what you call the air feed tubes>
did this last winter remove the center cover from around radio then remove the ashtray two screws hold it you will see a 1" round wireharrness that just rest ontop of the airtubes zip tie it up to one of the steel cross members noise is history its like 10 minute deal 9 minutes to take of the cover or a minute and a half if you don't care if u break it ...
