Question Ambient noise level in Reg Cab F150 XLT

Is it just me or is the ambient noise level higher in my 04 Reg Cab XLT? Seems like I hear noise louder from the rear than I ever did in my 1990 F150 Custom Reg cab. Trucks, motorcycles, loud cars behind me and the usual Thumping music at stoplights sound like they are in the cab with me or like I had a rear sliding window open (this cab doesn't have the slider). It's almost like they didn't put adequate sound proofing in the side and rear panels of the cab. I peeked behind the main panel on the rear of the cab and all that I could see was a thin piece of insulation stuck on the back of the plastic. Hardly seems like it's adequate to keep ambient sound out. After all the publicity about how "quiet the New 2004 F150 Cab" was I was truely surprised and dissapointed to hear this level of noise. Of course with MY stereo up it's not as noticable , but then I don't care to have my stereo blasting away all the time! Any ideas? BB

My 04 has a noticable quiteness to it as compared to my 03 150. But i also notice everything in or on it is a upgrade. They put alot more into this truck as compared to previous years . The quite ness will not dround out loud thumpers for it is not sound proof. With my windows up all i hear is the light resonance of my exhaust and that i cover by a little rolling stones at a moderate volume. Also you didn't hear the difference in the test drive. Cruising at 50 and no radio my exhaust is quite and i still hear a difference from my 03 from trucks or cars passing by.

I have a regular cab... I'm pleased with the sound level while driving ... seems relatively quiet to me with all the windows closed. GG

if the rest of the truck wasn't so quiet, the back wall wouldn't seem noisy

My '04 is noticably quieter than my '02. That and the new interior were a few of the reasons that I traded up.

Well Troops it must be me then, all I know is last winter running over the cinders and sand used for ice patrol up here created a tinny sound never heard in my 1990 F150 which had at about a inch of insulation top to bottom front to back, factory installed. The ambient noise I speak of is not while going down the road (yes this truck is quiet) other than then cinders, but in city traffic and at stoplights, etc. A truck with a DT466 engine at idle behind me sounds like its inside the cab. REALIZING no cab IS sound proof (not the point) and this never occured with any of my F150's and F250's (5 since 1979) I found it very unusual. I would have thought Ford would have put more sound proofing in the back of the cab. Guess I'll do it for them. So thanks for the constructive and informative replies which all always appreciated. BB

roadawg , I too have heard the tinny sound of rocks pinging, I think it is just the sounds of small rocks coming off the tires and hitting the inner wheel wells. It is loud but that is the only time I ever hear anything in my '04 reg cab. These trucks are unbelievably quite, took my wifes civic for a 1200km road trip and had to keep checking the windows to see if they were down it was that loud compared to my 150!

I to noticed road noise from the rear area,04 single cab fx4.so.i took the back and rear door panels of and put fiber 3/4'' carpet pad in. The air outlet holes are large and were letting in road noise ( have to crack window or slam door to close)also the tire jack area lets in noise as does the door latch area.
Very quiet now.
