Here is the update on that recall, hot off the press:
The following information concerns a BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing recall
that
was announced publicly today. Notification was given to the National Highway
Safety and Traffic Administration (NHTSA) in the United States and Transport
Canada in Canada. Our Quality department has identified the issue and
corrected
it.
After six tires were returned by consumers, BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing is
recalling tires manufactured during DOT weeks 15 and 16 (April 11-24, 2004)
in
our Fort Wayne, Ind. plant. A quality problem was identified that
potentially
impacts 3,500 passenger and light truck tires in six different brands
(BFGoodrich, Uniroyal, Medalist, Phantom, Prospector, Liberator). This
quality
problem causes abnormal vibration and noise issues and could result in steel
belt separation. To date, there have been no accidents or injuries reported
and
no property damage claims filed.
As a precaution, BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing is recalling a total of
46,000
tires made during the same period as the affected tires. Outside North
America,
this recall affects several countries in different geographic zones where
these
tires have been exported. The recalled tires will be replaced for consumers
free
of charge and consumers who have already had the recalled tires replaced
will be
reimbursed.
How to Identify Tires Affected by the Recall
The recalled tires have Department of Transportation tire identification
numbers
which begin with DOT BF and end with the last four digits 1504 or 1604. All
of the recalled tires were produced in week 15 and 16 this year (April
11-24, 2004) at the Ft. Wayne facility and include BFGoodrich, Uniroyal,
Liberator, Medalist, Phantom and Prospector brands.
