Question Revised Reverse Sensing

My buddy just got a new 2004 F150 Supercab FX4. My truck is an earlier (built in March I think) 2004 SuperCrew Lariat. Both have reverse sensing systems. Ford has obviously made an update as his radio will mute when the vehicle is placed in reverse to allow the driver to hear the beeping from the system. The system will not adjust the volume in my Lariat so if I'm jammin' the radio and go to back into a space I can't hear the beeping unless I manually turn down the radio. Anyone aware of this change? Can my truck be updated? Thanks for the replys.

No. I have Audiophile, he has single disc in dash.

Wouldn't think it would make a difference though.

Might be it, but I'd think the better radio would have the higher functionality.

My 04 FX4 SCrew with Audiophile and built 9/03 automatically reduces the volume with reverse sensing. Check owners manual, maybe it can be disabled.

I just checked the manual under the RSS section and the audiophile radio section with no luck. There is no mention of the ability to activate/deactivate the radio "mute" feature while using RSS.

I'm not positive as to when my vehicle was built, how can I figure out for sure?

My trucks build date is 9-03 and the stereo mutes when the RSS comes on.

Look on the B pillar on the driver side door near the bottom. The white tag there has the build date on it.

I was right, my build date is 03/2004. The plot thickens...

Ranman, I think you got a problem with your RSS because if it doesn’t mute the stereo, no matter how loud it’s playing, when it beeps, what good is it? There is defiantly a malfunction in your RSS. Take it to your dealer and have it fixed, it’s under warranty.

I've got a Lariat with the Audiophile 6CD built in July of 04 and mine doesn't mute. I was going to have it checked on my first oil change....love to hear updates.

I have a screw Lariat built in June of 04 and my radio does not mute whenever the RSS comes on but the beep seems to be pretty loud. I have the Ford Service manual CD June 04 release. The wiring diagram for the RSS does show a wire going to the mute input on the radio. So I don't know what is going on with it.

Seems like the newer models are the ones having the problems. I wonder why Ford decided to change this. My truck was bought in November 2003 and automatically mutes the music while beeping.

Update on RSS

I went and looked at the RSS module under the dash of my truck. According to the wiring diagram pin#7 coming from the RSS module plug goes to pin#20 on the radio unit. The plug on my RSS module does not even have a wire at pin#7. I would not be surprised if this is somthing that got thrifted out in later builds. When RSS first came out a couple of years ago there was a light on the dash that blinked to the rate of the beep. These lights were removed because they said people would pay more attention to the sound rather than the light.
