The variable assist power steering (vaps) on my crown vic is currently in default mode providing full-assist all the time. I’m not too crazy about having this much power assist all the time because the car is all over the place. The power steering system is not tied into the OBDII diagnostics so I can’t read any codes.

Has anyone trouble-shooted this system, and if so what would be the most probable cause?

Appreciate any advice.
