Question Audio install questions

I will be collecting my new F150 Supercab from Liverpool docks in the UK in a couple of weeks but I'm eager to have all the audio kit ready to install as soon as it arrives. I'm therefore wondering if someone can help me out with a few questions:

Does the 2004 F150 take 6x8 speakers in both the front and rear doors? Is there a good space to put a component tweeter in the front doors? I was hoping to use JL Audio XR570-CSi components in the front and XR570-CXi coaxials in the rear. However I wonder whether I'd be better off finding some 6x8s to fit rather than compromising by using 5x7s

Is there a useful place to hide an amp away? I have a 4 channel Sony amp that I'd like to use but it's quite large. I may well buy something smaller and better if I it turns out to be difficult finding a space for the Sony. I assume that I should be able to fit it under one of the seats but I wondered if there's some compartment (like where the factory audiophile amp goes) that I could hide it in.

Ultimately I plan to have a PC in the truck but that will have to wait until the new Xenarc fully motorized, in-dash 7” touchscreen VGA monitor is finally released later this year: http://www.xenarc.com/news/news-011904.html Meanwhile I will fit a regular single-DIN head unit. Has anyone tried to fit two single-DIN head units into one Double-DIN mounting hole? I'll need to be able to do this to have both the Audio controller and the PC screen mounted in the dash simultaneously.

Thanks

Yes, they are both 6x8s and 5x7s will fit.
There is a factory hole for the tweeter. You can't miss it when you remove the speaker panel.
I have a 4 channel amp under my pass. seat and an amp under my rear seat. Look in gallery for pictures.
Sorry, not sure about your last question. You may try asking that question in the audio forum on this site.
Good luck.

I have the same components in the front doors. I had to bore out the tweeter hole to accomodate the size of the JL basket, but it was a minor tweek with my Dremel tool. I ran to pairs of wairs through the door tunnels and mounted the crossovers in the cab. I have not yet put in other components, but there are a few threads with advice getting the rear door panels off and amp location.

Good luck.

Nice to see another UK member

You may want to wait till you pick up the truck first as there will be a few factors to take in account. If you have the floor shifter this opens up loads of space for amps and changers etc. Also what stereo system is coming in the truck as the audiophile has nine speakers and sounds prety good as stock. I have fitted an alpine 900 motorised screen and dvd player with 12 disc changer in the centre armrest, alpine media control under the drivers seat and amp and navigation hid in centre console. I am waiting for the new alpine hard drive head unit to be released to fit under the screen, and yes I'm told it will fit. I ordered a fitting kit off ebay, really cheap and came with everything even wiring adaptor. (post was more than kit).

Good luck

Darren

Last weekend I just put in MB Quart 6.5" components in the front doors. A very small amount for grinding on the metal was all it took. Stock speakers will fall right back in w/o a problem.

I removed the back seat (back rest portion) and mounted a Kenwood Excelon 541 4 channel and a Kenwood Excelon class d mono 811D on the wall with rubber washers. I will have to trime the factory sound/insulation though. The keyless entry unit was twisted 90 degrees and have plenty of room. It works very well with these amps because the fans are positioned low and have plenty of ventilation.

MB Quart 6X8 in the rear doors and a dual 10" sub box from Supercrewsound.com under the seats.

Sirius Satellite unit is under the dash.

I chose not to mount anything under a seat for fear of snow/muddy boots.

BTW, getting the seat back off the Screw was tricky: It hangs on three cleats on the top and rests on 3 seats for a bar on the bottom. The lower bar is retained by clips. You don't have to remove teh lower seat torx bolts.

Good luck!

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies & info.

It's good to hear that there is a std mounting location for the tweeters - even if it needs some tweaking.

Brett - I'll have a search to find the threads re amp location.

Keener - I presume that you'd rate the 6.5" MB Quarts above the 6x8s - or is it just that the 6x8s don't come in component form? Sounds like a good position for the amps - I'll look into the Kenwood amps and maybe switch to using one (or two) of them. Do you mean that the keyless entry unit is mounted behind the rear seat backs too? How strange! Stupid question - are you happy with the sound from your finished setup + what type of music do you listen to? I haven't yet heard any MB Quarts

Maybe I should take Darren's advice and wait for the truck to arrive before commiting to buying kit. I think that the JL Audio's have now sold out from eBay anyway - getting them for a good price was the main driving force behind my haste.

If I can mount amps anywhere other than under seats Ill try that for the same muddy boot reasons as Keener.

Darren - Sounds like a very impressive source setup that you've got there. My truck just comes the basic audio system - I assumed that I'd be changing it to accept an aux input from my PC (MP3/nav/mobile internet) setup so didn't bother with the audiophile + I was very restricted with availability of the colour/model combination that I wanted (Blue/Grey FX4 from Canada). I don't have the centre console as I wanted a bench type seat so unfortunately I don't have all the extra space that would give me. I'm having a fitting kit + wiring loom adapter shipped over with the truck - £20. Maybe I should have a sub enclosure sent over in it too - to save on shipping!

Thank you all for the help. I'm sure that Ill end up with more questions when I actually get my hands on it.

Cheers.

andyknox,

I have been looking but have not been able to find a picture of a right-hand drive 2004 F150.

Can you help me out with a picture of one?

Subwoofers

Hi guys!

I just picked up my 2004 F150 Supercab (sold the Lightning), and I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas of where to mount a 12" subwoofer.

I had a 10" before, but I need the 12" to get the sound I want. I scoured the truck but I can't seem to find any good places to put it.

Even if there is a bit of custom work, I would do it, I just need some ideas.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I didn't mean to hijack this thread, sorry to jut off topic

STXDriver,

My truck is being imported from Canada and is therefore LHD. I don't believe that Ford make a RHD version of the F150 - not even for the Australian market otherwise I would have brought one in from there. We've already got a Toyota HiLux imported from Australia - they didn't bring the Extra (Super) Cab version oficially into the UK until this year.

I'm sorry mate but look at this, only in manchester as well. The 2004 conversion will be ready for October.http://www.americanpickuptrucks.com/

It just won't be right driving an F150 with RHD anyhow, I'd also question what materials they use i.e. plastics etc.

There are plenty of pictures on this site for stxdriver and also shows the conversion being done.

By the way do you live in the north west Andy or are you just collecting from Liverpool.

Cheers

Andy,
I'm pretty sure your truck will have the mount for component speakers up front (mid and separate tweeter). If so, GET IT! Components by design have the ability to sound sooo much better. It's ok to go with 6x8 coaxials in the rear doors.

I have had MB Quarts for years and love the sound. Some folks on this forum feel they are too "bright" for their taste. If you set the crossover to the "plus" freqs, they will be painful. I set mine to -3. You will see all this in the install manual. The crossover boxes fit well in the doors behind the panel.

The system sounds really good. As with all new systems of this size, it takes a while to tune it in. I listen to a mix of music. Hip-hop, rap, metal, jam bands. Having sattelite radio (Sirius) makes listening to a variety easy.

I chose Kenwood Excelon deck and amps because they communicate with a DIN (LX-BUS) cable. I can set all the amp levels from the HU, instead of going to the amp directly. This is the theory anyhoo. I have to find out why mine isn't working. I think the satellite I/O is the culprit.

I got all my stuff from this website:

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...facturerID=624

and www.supercrewsound.com, for the subs.

Lates!
