Tires Choices on 2004 FX4???
Can anyone explain the difference between the two choices of tire for the 18" wheel on an FX4 when ordering.
I see them on Ford's site as:
P275/65Rx18 OWL All-Terrain
and
LT275/65Rx18 OWL All-Terrain
The LT tire is more expensive. When I ordered I just did the P275... and am wondering if I should have chosen the LT275.
Does anyone know the difference? What are most guys running on their 18s??

LT stands for light truck tire, P stand for a passenger i.e. (*****) type tire. LT will have a higher load ratings and side walls on the LT are normally in the 6 to 8 ply range. Where as the P type will be normally in the 4 ply range and have a lower load range. Depends on how you will be utilizing your truck as to the type of tire you should require.
I have the LT tires on my FX4...they are Goodyear Wrangler AT/S tires. When I bought my truck, the P tires on the trucks on the dealer's lot were BF Goodrich Rugged Trails. Personally, I think the AT/S looks better on an FX4, since it's a little more aggresive-looking. I'm guessing the AT/S might do a little better than the Rugged Trail if you were to go off-road, and it might do a little better in snow and heavy rain (the AT/S is goodyear's Aqua-Tread truck tire). I'm sure the Rugged Trail is probably a good tire though, especially if you never go off-road. If you don't like them, at least they are something you can easily change.
So the LT Goodyears might look a bit more aggressive??? Or maybe just look a bit better then a normal P tire. If there is even a remote chance of the tread being more aggressive or having a better "cool" factor, I will see if I can still change the order to the LTs.

It have the LT's (or Wrangler AT/S's if you want to get specific) on my new '04 S-Crew Lariat. They seem to handle real well and drive nice, but they are a little noise. They're hissy/whiny on curves when you're applying a lot of power. When these wear out in 50k miles or so, I'll replace them with BFG All Terrains, but in the meantime, I'll take the free ones that are on the truck!

I also have the LT Goodyear AT/S's. I've never been a big fan of "P" tires on trucks. I'm not in the market for an ultra-smooth ride or for drag-racing my 4x4 so I opted for the LT's. I actually went to the lot to see the difference. I have noticed that some Avalanches also come with the AT/S's but in at "p" version with a little different tread pattern. The goodyears have performed well in wet clay and the sand so I'm content until they come out with an 18" MT/R.
