2004 5.4 3v redline is?

I did a search, can't seem to find a concrete answer.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I can hold a shift till 5000, but redline on this new engine should be more, shouldn't it?

thanx all

Mine holds until about 2-2500, or at least that's as much as I get on it.....but I've only got 1518 miles as it sits in the drive.

I'm sure the modular Ford engines are capable of 7000 RPM redlines. But what you get from the factory is a de-tuned redline for reliability and longevity concerns. If they put the shift points at 7K, there'd be alot more engine replacements under warranty.

2004 3valve

5400 rpm
Go to the Troyer Performance web page and check out the custome tuning for the 3valve.

I've been wondering if anyone else even noticed this. The 5.4 is rated at 300 HP @ 5000 RPM's. My fuel cutoff comes in at about 4900. My truck was built in Nov. and has almost 12,000 miles now and, even after a recent PCM reflash, has never seen 5000 RPM's. I'm not a habitual leadfoot, but when I hammer it, I want every HP that I paid for. I understand protecting the power plant and ensuring longevity, but this is overkill. Why rate an engines peak at 5000 and then prevent you from getting there? Every time I go WOT, just when it starts to really to make power, it short shifts. It's very noticeable to me. Surprising that it's not to others.....

Clem, I feel you. I'm just keeping my mouth shut and saving my beans for the Stage 1 kit (or the CAN flasher, whichever comes first). Seems it will solve many of my qualms about this engine:

1. poor throttle response
2. shift points
3. HP/torque
4. speed limiter (not real important, but nice to know)

With all of those optimized, this thing is liable to actually feel like 300hp !

How do we know if the tach is "dead on" for measurement? Could be off by 100 rpm. Just a guess.

With mine I can reach 5000 RPM in drive. I have never seen fuel limiter. Build date 1-04 no mods. It seems to me that shift point could go to 52-5300. With throttle WFO it does not appear to be maxed at 5000, still making good power.

chuck wheet,

You might be right about the tach being off a bit, but when I checked it against the digital tach in test mode, it also showed that I am short shifting at 4800-4900 RPM's. If I manually shift my truck, it will cut out before 5000. When I had it in for service a while back, they flashed the PCM, which seemed to do little or nothing. They didn't have any solution for the early shifts.

I, like many, am waiting for the Superchips tuner to become available. My last three trucks have been "chipped" and I enjoyed the firmer shifts, higher shift points and a bit of an increase in power. Bring it on!

With the Superchips reflash, at WOT, the shifts from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd happen at 5400 RPMs. The 3rd to 4th shift remains at the factory setting of 4800 RPMs.

In Mike Troyer's write ups on the 2004 he does indicate that the stock upshift points (1-2 and 3-4 at WOT) are anywhere from 4900-5000 RPMs. Clem, I'd say yours is shifting the way the factory intended...unfortunately.

Typically, the limit for hydraulic lifters is 6,000 RPM. This is why the cobra is OHC. With OHC you can go higher, like 7,000 RPM. This is how the imports go higher in the band. You are limited to the 5,000 range right now from the programing. Changing the programing and the cam will get you into the higher range. If you go with solid lifters, you can also get into much higher rpms. They require more work and need to be relashed periodically. I don't know if there are any cams, lifters, or other internal parts available yet for this motor.
