grinding noise on startup

Anyone have this? Seems if my truck, XLT, Scab, sits for a day or longer, sometimes it makes a quick grinding/rumble noise when starting up. If it was one of my old vehicles, I'd think it might be a noisy lifter.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like it might need a trip to a dealership to make sure it isnt something serious. If it is maybe they can fix it before it takes out something else.

grinding noise

My 04 Screw has done this twice also. I drive a clunker car to work so my truck only gets driven 1-2 times/week. But twice now on startup it has made a weird noise, lasts for about 1 second. I'd take it in to be looked at but it's so random, I'm sure they never find it. It does it just as I'm turning the key.
Other than that, I love the truck.

Almost exactly my deal. I'm not sure what to do. I think you are correct in that it would never make that noise at the dealer. I'm concerned about long term wear and tear. I was hoping to hear from others here with a simular problem. Then I'll decide what to do.

thanks for the reply

Thumbs down noice

It has also happend to me a few times on start only when the car sits there for more than one day. It seems to me like that noice comes outa the A/C vents not sure what it is but it don't sound right.

Unhappy

The only time I've ever heard grinding in any vehicle immediately after startup is when I leave my key turned too long afterwards.
I hope this isn't what your doing. Maybe your starter isn't disengaging properly. Just a guess but you never know. If it is random then it may be difficult to detect. Good luck with this and I hope you all get rid of it.

I'm not sure if this is your cure or not but if you have changed oil and filter in your truck and did'nt put a filter with the backflow gaget in it it may let oil drain out of filter. When I change oil in mine I have to pre-fill the filter or I get a strange noise at start-up. Motorcraft filter FL-820s has anti-siphon(I think that's what it is called) valve. Hope this helps.
