What Is This Noise??
This might be a new one that has not been discussed yet. Here it goes.
When I am going anywhere between 40-60 mph and I take my foot off the throttle, a second later there is a howling type noise that seems to becoming from the front of the truck. Sometimes you can feel this howl very slightly in the steering wheel. If I let off the throttle to begin to slow down for a red light or something, a second later I get a howl that only last for a second. I can duplicate it all day long, one howl after another if I want to. It sounds like a sound wind can sometimes make. It is very strange. Any ideas? 04 FX4 Scab. Thanks.

There have been some threads about a noise similar to this. Have you looked at the plastic air hose that goes into the fender from the air filter housing? There is supposed to be an o-ring on it where the hose goes into the fender. If not, take it in and have the dealer fix it. If it is there see if its seated properly. I hope this helps.
I took a better look at the o-ring seal. About half of the o-ring fits snugly up against the wall inside the fender, the other side does not even touch the wall and can't be sealing worth a damn. This may explain my howling noise. If I get this fixed, I will still have the vibration the dealer can't fix.

Hey, I have the same exact noise problem. I just joined F150online to see if anyone else had the same issue. I have a new 2004 F150, and it makes a very strange noise for about a second whenever I take my foot off the gas. Like a honking, whining noise or something. Did you ever get your noise fixed?
Thanks!
Thanks!
I have this also. It sounds like a ship honking in the distance everytime you let off the gas.
If I shift into neutral and gas/letoff it does not happen.
It seems to be worse when it is humid or wet outside. I first noticed it on a trip to Florida from Texas with about 10k miles.
I just changed my air filter at 20k hoping for a cure. Still hear it some.

My 5.4 screw makes this sound but it's constant and peaks at about 58 mph. It's about the same sound as blowing across the top of a coke bottle. If I let off the gas, the sound goes away. Put it in neutral and it goes away. If I turn off the overdrive and remain at 58, it's still there. If it's wind noise, why would it go away when in neutral? If it's engine rpm related, it should go away when in 3rd gear. Doesn't make sense.....

I had exactly the same problem with my 5.4 SCREW 4x4. It has been in the shop for the last couple of days getting the rear end rebuilt.
*** Update ***
I got my truck back today. I had forgotten how quiet the truck can be without the "whine"..... I'm glad I finally got it fixed.
